In the last couple months, 2 different windows 10 machines periodically get a (nag) message that updates failed and a manual download is required for the latest version. Here is the config for both:
68.2.2 (64-bit)
Which I believe is the latest version. Uninstalling and re-installing failed to fix the problem. Is this a known bug? When will it be fixed?

viewtopic.php?f=39&t=3056653 is a similar thread. It explains how to delete the stored updates.

I found https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1586699 ("Thunderbird can't update to the latest version. ... Download a fresh copy..." Alert/Warning/Notice, but "Thunderbird is already up-to-date") . In that case Kaspersky anti-virus "appears" to be the culprit. What AV are you using?

https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1598269 and https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1593720 are two other related bug reports .

I have no clue if this problem is related to the problems with the doorhanger icon that was added to notify you of updates being available.

If you're a Kaspersky user, the problem is due to its scanning of secure connections:
