but the new address
Do you mean "new address LIST"?
Are you in the Address Book window when following Doug's directions?
What name are you giving the new list?
You could post a screen shnot of that address book window. http://kb.mozillazine.org/Posting_a_scr ... _the_forum

I was in the Address Book window when I followed the directions to generate a list called FRIENDS. The list was contained within one of the 3 listst. I clicked on it and saw that it contained the specific addresses I wanted. I started an email and double clicked on FRIENDS and got the word in the TO space but no addresses. I would send a screen shot if I knew how to do it

Hi,
For future reference...(Just a tad more info.)
To post an image here, see this page, as Dan had already posted the KB link...
> http://kb.mozillazine.org/Posting_a_scr ... _the_forum

After you've taken the screen shot/s...
Reduce it/them to around 600 x 500 or so in your favourite image editor, (Be sure to remove any personal info.)
& upload them to your favourite image hosting site.

eg;
(Using "postimages.org",
0/. Upload your image.
1/. Select > from the "Do not resize" drop down, 640 x 480.
2/. No expiration. (Leave as default or as you require.
3/. Choose > Images to upload.
3a/. After the image/s have been uploaded.
4/. Select > Hot Link for Forum.
5/. Paste that link in your forum thread.
6/. Your image will be displayed in your post.

or if you're on a different site...
Select the code listed as "Forum Thumbnail" & paste that link in your post.

(Always choose the "Custom" Install.)

It sounds as though Thunderbird is doing what it is supposed to do. A mailing list has no address of its own but simply identifies the set of contacts that will be included in the outgoing message. Thus there will be no "email address" shown in the To field when a list is entered as the "To:", only the name of the list. When the message is sent, that list name will be replaced by all of the email addresses of the contacts that make up the list.

Did the mailing list name include a space? There was a bug a little while ago where a embedded space could return that error. I don't know if it was fixed yet.
