Do you mean that OAuth2 authentication didn't work? Google once broke OAuth2 in Thunderbird due to changing some implementation details. It was a nasty surprise to everybody. The next version of Thunderbird followed the new scheme, and there hasn't been a similar problem with later versions. Its been a good while, I don't remember when this occurred. But AFAIK authentication using normal password with Gmail has never broken.

Key3.db needs to be viewed as part of a set with cert8.db and secmod.db. However, it sounds like you have a working configuration for 60.*. Good.

It was the final step in the setup for Gmail that did not work. That was why I had to use SeaMonkey's login file with Tbird to avoid having to do that final step (which sets the password).
