Thunderbird SBBoD when opening Preferences (Mac)

I just had to change a Gmail password so tried to change it in Thunderbird. It wasn't obvious where to do it so having found the correct method, I tried to do so via the Preferences from the Thunderbird menu (top right) but as soon as I did so, I got SBBoD. I tried a few times and on the last attempt, I left it in this state for about 20 minutes as the CPU was high and I thought maybe it is doing something and will finish eventually but my fans got too annoying so I forced quit.

I have no add-ons installed.

This is new to me.
I haven't seen the SBBoD for years now when opening the TB Preferences. Always running the French TB version with the German and en-US language packs installed.
Actually no issues with TB 78.14.0 and TB 91.2.1 (FR-version) and language packs installed in both.

In earlier TB versions I had run into problems with the language packs when I hadn't disabled (or deleted) them before a major update :
TB would open in a tiny window and was unusable. I had to start in safe mode and delete the incompatible language packs.

There are quite a few reports on SUMO of Preferences hanging TB 91 on OS X, and removing language packs appears to fix it. I don't think it happened in 78, and it might not happen if the packs are removed before the update. But most users will simply update a 78 profile with the current packs, not expecting, or knowing the source of, hangs.

The first bug is not for the macOS TB version and the second was for Firefox and is closed now.

From the German Thunderbird Mail DE forum https://www.thunderbird-mail.de/forum/ I know that many users had erroneously installed the German language pack instead of a German dictionary (the German TB version by default does not contain a dictionary).

All these users had big problems when updating from TB 68 to TB 78 since they could no longer open TB in normal mode :

But https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1642415 equally affected Thunderbird Mac users, if not more so than Firefox, especially accessing preferences as seen in the many duplicates of that bug.

With what version of Thunderbird?
And along the lines of what someone else asked, any language pack installed, AND what base locale is installed?
