This one is really driving me nuts:
When I open FF, it asks me if I want to "compact folders to save disk space".
If I say yes, it starts the compacting procedure, AND tries to get new messages from the server in the same time. Then, as one can imagine, the two processes are using the same folders and conflict with each other.
The worse is that all your incoming messages are lost.

Is there some setting to get FF not to fetch new messages when it is compacting?

Moved to Thunderbird Support since I know you really meant Thunderbird.

Turn off the "check for message every..." and "check for messages at startup" temporarily. Compacting shouldn't take that long if you are doing it regularly and are keeping your inbox empty by moving messages to other folders or deleting.
