'Do this automatically for files like this'' does not work

'Do this automatically for files like this from now on' doesn't work

Hello thunderbird support. When I open attachments like photos or pdf files, it always asks me what should thunderbird do with this file, open with windows photo viewer. And there is a checkbox for 'do this automatically for files like this from now on'. That checkbox is always clicked, but it still asks me every time. It seems to forget. Is there anyway to actually get it to automatically open directly to windows photo viewer every time? And then likewise with pdf files and so on.

Known bug (with many duplicate bug reports). It worked fine for most users until version 91. If I remember correctly the bug also effects Firefox and rather than implement their own fix they're waiting for the fix in Gecko (by a Firefox developer).
