using ubuntu 20.04.4
I had a long posting about moving thunderbird between computers not to long ago. It got VERY complex with little success. then I had a system go down and was setting it up and thought I might try the old way. Here is what I did. I went into thunderbird, went to help from the little three lines in the top right, then went to trouble shooting to find out which was the profile. I then went to the .thunderbird folder and renamed the profile by adding "old_" to the name. I then went ot a functioning thunderbird and copied its profile to a memory stick and copied from that stick to the brand new thunderbird I had just installed. I also replaced the name of the old profile to the one I just copied in the installs.ini and the profile.ini files.
then I ran thunderbird and IT WAS ALL THERE! My address book, my email, you know - EVERYTHING!
Given the pain I had previously I thought I would post this one. I didn't think it would work as it used to which got me into trouble because I did something wrong but, this time, it worked like a champ. Hope this helps somebody!

Re: moving thunderbird from one computer to another
Thanks for posting this! I'm going to embark on something similar soon. In my case, I'm upgrading my HDD to a SSD and in the process, I'm going to upgrade my OS, etc. So, I'm planning on doing what you did:
Copy my current profile to a flash drive
Install the SSD and new OS and the latest version of Thunderbird
Copy my old profile to the new SSD
Keep my fingers crossed that it "just works".
Peace...
