TB102 major incompatibility problems

Post by RouseA »

Thunderbird has just automatically updated to 102 and several of my add-ons no longer work, which makes it virtually unusable:
Cardbook
Category Manager
OpenAttachmentByExtension
Search Button

These are serious problems and I can't work without them. How do I revert to an earlier version and stop it updating? All download sites seem to access 102.1.0

Normally, once you have updated to version 102, extensions should be updated automatically. If that doesn't happen, you could also do it manually.

– In Thunderbird, press ALT to show full menus, then open Tools –> Addons and Themes

– Just above the list of extensions, click on the cogwheel and select Search for updates.

– Update all extensions.

– At that point, you may wish to restart Thunderbird, though I don't think it is necessary.

Basically, in the list above, only Category Manager hasn't been updated

http://kb.mozillazine.org/Go_back_to_an ... hunderbird has links to the older setup programs. If you want to reuse your existing profile with 91.* you will need to add --allow-downgrade to the command line arguments in the shortcuts properties. I suggest you also export your address book as a .csv file beforehand as the schema for the address book in 102 hides the phone numbers if you revert to 91.

"C:\Program Files\Mozilla Thunderbird\thunderbird.exe" --allow-downgrade

https://gitlab.com/CardBook/CardBook/-/issues/1413 is an issue with the dark theme using CardBook with 102 so I'm surprised you couldn't use CardBook.

https://addons.thunderbird.net/en-US/th ... on/?src=ss claims to support up to version 104. The search button add-on works fine with me using 102.1.0

https://addons.thunderbird.net/en-US/th ... src=search claims to support up to 103. I was able to install open attachment by extension using 102.1.0.

I suspect you just need to get rid of a few add-ons that don't work with 102 such as category manager, that prevent the others from working.

See viewtopic.php?f=39&t=3097548&hilit=policy.json for how to create a policy.json file in the distribution directory of Thunderbird installation directory to prevent it from checking for updates.

  • 1) When I click the cogwheel and select Check for updates it says No Updates Found
    2) Under each of the disabled extensions there is a yellow band saying xxx is incompatible with Thunderbird 102.1.0 and a button for More information
    3) When I click the button it opens a tab that says Find alternatives to no longer maintained Thunderbird extensions and a button saying Show add-on
    4) When I click the button a list of all versions of the extension is shown, each with a button Add to Thunderbird
    5) If I select the latest version the extension is updated and enabled
I am therefore able to get the extensions to work in V102.1.0, but it is not intuitive. The text at (3) implies that it is going to search for alternatives, not upgrades to the existing extension. The text at (4) implies that the extension is being added, not updated.

Surely this should all have happened automatically during the update

Afraid not. It depends on what your default settings are. If you go to the Add-ons tab in Thunderbird and click on the Settings gear wheel one of the options in the context menu is "Update add-ons automatically". If that is not ticked then your add-ons will not update unless you manually intervene.

I haven't upgraded to version 102 yet. Previously, when Thunderbird updated itself to v. 68, 78 or 91, the process was automatic, but in two steps: Thunderbird was upgraded first, then extensions were (and usually a quit and restart was needed between both). One thing, though, normally, these extensions would update themselves, but they would not reactivate themselves. So look at them, look at their version number, and try to see if you can activate them. If so, problem solved; if not, I don't know why your 3 extensions were not updated automatically. Either they should have or there is a bug in TB 102 or these extensions or in your profile. I suggest you force the update.

In a nutshell, to force the update, visit https://addons.thunderbird.net, and search specifically for Cardbook, OpenAttachmentByExtension, and Search Button. When you visit these pages, you should be able to click on the button "update". DO NOT PRESS REMOVE!

If that doesn't work, use your browser to download them on your desktop, then, in Thunderbird, open the Addons and Themes panel and slide, one at a time, each of these extensions over the said panel. They should then be updated and be able to work in TB 102.
