Prevent msgs from certain domain from POP3 retrieval?

Post by thoste »

One of my Thunderbird accounts is for an gmail.com POP3 account.

Retrieval of (ALL) messages works.
I setup deletion from mail server after successful download.
This feature works too and should be untouched.

However I would like to download NOT all the incoming messages but only some of them.

Example: I don't want to download all the messages with a sender *@foobar.com.
They should either be
- NOT downloaded
or alternatively
- downloaded but not deleted from mail server

How can I achieve this?

Do you know if gmail mail provider offers an exclusion/hiding from POP3 retrieval

Disable deletion from mail server after successful download then use message filters so that messages except with sender *@foobar.com are deleted from the server after the messages are downloaded.

Or set up a filter on the Gmail server to move messages from *@foobar.com out of the inbox folder and into some other folder on the server. Since POP accounts can only access the server inbox folder, those *@foobar.com messages would be invisible to THunderbird and thus not downloaded.

Another approach would be to check "fetch headers only" in the POP accounts server settings, move all of the contacts that you want to download mail from to a dedicated address book (I'll call it xyz) and then create a message filter that used "From" "is in my address book" "xyz" to take action "Fetch from POP server".

That way you automatically download messages from the specified From: addresses and have to click on a link in the message body of the other messages to fetch the real message body. That link is automatically created due to the "fetch headers only" setting and has some wording telling you to click on it to fetch the actual message body.
