I've searched and have come up with nothing so here goes.
I am running Thunderbird 0.4a (20031110) on my win2k laptop.
I have both my sending certificate and the recipient's certificate installed in the certificate manager.
When I choose to send an email both signed and encrypted the email never successfully sends. The sending dialog box stays onscreen at 100% until it times out after 5minutes or so. However, I am able to send only signed emails.
Unable to send signed and encrypted (s/mime) email

I had the same problem!
Sending signed messages work, but with encrypted messages the 100% sending dialog never disappears and the email is never sent...
Btw, it didn't matter if i use software certificates or certs on a smart card.
After installing Thunderbird 0.4 (20031205) the problem disappeared =)
