Thunderbird 1.5 - messages got mixed up after the upgrade

Post by Sunny Thunderbird »

Recently I upgraded my Thunderbird from 1.0.7 to 1.5. After the upgrade subjects, messages and senders in all my folders got mixed up. Each email message has wrong subject and wrong sender attached to it.

I tried to clean up the registry and Thunderbird profile in Application Data before reinstalling Thunderbird 1.5, no success.

I tried to install Thunderbird 1.0.7 again – no success.

I tried installing Thunderbird 1.5 on a different machine [that never had any version of Thunderbird installed before] – same result [all messages are mixed up].

I can send email – no problem. However, when I receive an email, I try to open it, but message is empty. Then I try to open other messages [that are mixed up] and then the new one again – it opens with a message and sender from a different email.

I also tried to open my folders in MS Outlook, ALL MESSAGES ARE FINE!! Nothing is mixed up.

Is there a setting in Thunderbird 1.5 that affects how messages are displayed?

Thank you very much for any help/suggestions.

Did you maybe click the 'Global Inbox' option by mistake? That could be causing this. See here how to use/not use that option.
I have multiple accounts set up in Thunderbird, I dont use Global Inbox.

Hmm, I went to Tools -> Account Settings -> Server Settings and...there is no Advanced tab that pops up a dialog box with the the "POP" tab [as it is described here http://kb.mozillazine.org/Global_Inbox].

I am using IMAP server, maybe this is why i do not see the POP tab.

Thank you for the suggestion, though.

Someone here solved this by deleting their .msf files.

Close Thunderbird. Find and delete all of the files with the .msf file extension in your profile folder/Mail (http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_Folder#Thunderbird) for the offending account. You must have "View hidden files and folders on" http://spywarewarrior.com/viewtopic.php?t=272 and you need to set "hide extensions for known file types" off (just below View Hidden) if you are using Windows. These files will be rebuilt when you open Thunderbird and access the folders again. You will get a "Building Summary file" notication. Let it work.

No, it did not help. I removed all .msf files. They were recreated again with the same problem, when i started Thunderbird.

I also tried to remove all .msf files and reinstall Thunderbird - same problem.

Thank you for the advice :)

TB 1.5 scrambles IMAP headers and bodies

Post by jsage »

Same problem here, with 1.5rc versions and 1.5 release versions. However I can add a few new facts.

First, I have two IMAP mailboxes, one on a server running Courier IMAP v4 - that mailbox works just fine with TB 1.5.

The other mailbox is on a server running GMS v11 Build 3365. That mailbox exhibits the same behavior as Sunny has noted - message bodies are mixed up, bits of header appear everywhere, wrong bodies with wrong headers, etc.

What I've done to try to resolve the issue was first to delete the msf and let TB rebuild - no success. Then I deleted both the mailbox and msf files, no success. Finally I moved all the messages out of the IMAP inbox, so that it was empty. First message in the inbox was fine, subsequent messages got out of order very quickly.

Interestingly, the mailbox in the server remains in good working order, so reverting back to TB 1.07 gets me back into shape.

But I wonder if there's a solution to this buglet?

thanks,

Addendum:

The server working well runs Courier, which reports itself as IMAP4rev1 (telnet to 143). The GMS server reports IMAP4.

I agree with jsage, Thunderbird 1.0.7 works fine...

I gave up on Thunderbird 1.5 for now :)

I have been having similar problems since I switched to 1.5. I was getting messages that were totally unrelated to the subject and sender. When I viewed message source it was even crazier. The "source" that TB showed me often started with clear message text BEFORE the message headers. "Find"s of the subject or sender would come up empty.
Apparently, TB1.5 was setting pointers into its massive inbox file that were wrong.
Another thing I noticed was that while I did have quite a few messages in my inbox (~100), my inbox file was over 600 megabytes in size. Ouch!
I did get relief by deleting the inbox msf file but the problem came back two days later.
I have had no power interruptions or abnormal shutdowns.
Something seems very wrong with 1.5
Just adding my experience to the pile.

May or may not be related to this thread, but the symptoms are the same.

I'm running 60.2.1 (64-bit) and many years have elapsed. Yet I just went to search for an old message in my Sent folder (circa 6 months old). The search found the message, correct sender, recipient and subject, but when I open the message, I get a totally different e-mail.

Happy to hear any ideas if this has been seen elsewhere and with solutions other than deleting the .msf files.
