TB has been working well for months. Earlier tonight, was tweaking with a new email account and then it crashed. Rebooted computer and tried to start TB -- as it tried to start, it crashed again.
I have tried re-installing TB -- same thing, crash.
1) Can anyone give me a recommendation how to get it to work properly?
2) Most importantly, is there a file in the Mozilla folder that has my saved emails ? Or am I screwed because I didn't export/save a copy of my email messages ?
Thanks in advance
Thunderbird crashes when I start normally & safe-mode

Your message files should be fine.
Try this:
First, backup your profile, just in case: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_backup
Find and delete all of the files with the .msf file extension in your profile folder/Mail http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_Folder#Thunderbird including your Local Folders, especially if you are using the global inbox. You must have "View hidden files and folders" on http://spywarewarrior.com/viewtopic.php?t=272 and you need to set "hide extensions for known file types" off (just below View Hidden) if you are using Windows. These are your mail summary files and do not hold any messages themselves. They will be rebuilt the next time you open each folder in Thunderbird. Compact all your folders when you have completed this.
To avoid this happening again, see the tips in these articles:

Re: Thunderbird crashes when I start normally & safe-mode
I just want to say THANK YOU!!!! I have been trying to figure out why Thunderbird installed on my new laptop kept crashing. Read so many articles online. Tried everything! Thank you sooooooo much. I restarted in safe mode, which by the way in windows 10, in safe mode you need to use your microsoft password, not the password that you use to log into your computer. It took me an hour to figure that out. After restarting in safe mode to open up thunderbird where is hopefully would not crash, so I could see if add-ons were interfering. Anyway, it still kept crashing too quick for me to even see the add-ons. So I went to the %appdata% file to thunderbird, to profile to the .exe file and searched all the .msf files and deleted them. Like a MIRACLE Thunderbird no longer crashed. You are a life saver. Was so frustrated was going to return the laptop.
