The reason you couldn't find it is because it doesn't exist. Somebody probably decided not to add support for importing generic mbox files to Tools->import because they viewed it as something that could be done manually, even though it would have been a nice feature.

Just copy the mbox file to your local folders subdirectory in your profile and the next time Thunderbird starts it will discover it.

If you copy the file and you get gibberish, you might have to use something like an archive command in your old email client to generate a mbox file. I discovered that my old calypso client didn't actually use mboxs like it claimed, what it really supported was the ability to import/export them.

Excellent! That worked thanks. (OOI, the source was Entourage.)

Did I miss this in the docs?

I don't think its in the user doc's, although one of the guides on the net might mention it. Lots of things are undocumented, or its assumed you've picked it up by osmosis from working with similar products.

For example, there is no complete list of all of the preferences you can enter in prefs.js. I've found http://www.cs.colorado.edu/~dowdy/netscape_cfg/ns6/ and http://www.mozilla.org/mailnews/arch/ac ... nager.html very usefull, but you occasionally run across others only by browsing this forum.

Aha. Shame, because

even the manual method needs support from the docs, else no-one would find it!

This seesm to be the biggest shortcoming in what is other wise a great program IMO.

That is more acceptable that the absence of a list of the GUI commands with explanations. The user choosing Help gets only:

...a site ... intended for users who want to learn how to configure
Thunderbird to fit their needs.

I there a sub-project going to produce user docs?
