For xmas this year my 5 ( almost 6 ) year old daughter is getting her own computer. It's running Ubuntu and will have plenty of games and movies for her to watch. One thing I would like to add in the near future is an email client she can use to send email to her grandparents and cousins. Thunderbird UI is far to "all-inclusive" for this age group. Does any know of or willing to write a very simple theme for kids?

The main screen could hold just 2 icons Read and Write. All the extra 'fluff' should be hidden. I'm not a developer or I would try to kick this out myself? Any suggestions?

Thanks.

You can customize the Thunderbird toolbar to remove any buttons you don't want to use. Right click on a blank space on the toolbar and drag any unwanted icons from the toolbar to the dialog box that appears.

You'll probably want to keep more than just the two buttons you mention. Won't YOU need some way to delete old messages? Won't your daughter be replying to received messages?

Moving to Thunderbird Support.

Right I've been playing a bit with a customized toolbar and I can get it looking fairly straight forward. I know thunderbird wasn't designed as a kids email client but neither was any other linux mail client that I've been able to find. I'd gladly put up a fund if someone was willing to put together a kids theme for Thunderbird. Maybe there are some other parents out there that want their kids using a non-virus ridden email client :)

There are a couple of themes that are more childlike. Have you looked? I remember seeing them, but don't remember their names. Here are a few:
