When I tried this "fix" I got a message that it failed because it was not compatible with Netscape. Now what? This is striping and grarbled text is killing me in the new update.

You have to download that XPI file using a browser (Netscape, Firefox, ...) and store it on your desktop. Then open Thunderbird, go into Tools > Add-ons and find the Install button in the lower left corner of the window that's opening up. Point it to the XPI file and it should install.
The error message results from Netscape trying to install the extension within Netscape. Since it was designed for Thunderbird, it will report "incompatible" on this attempt. I agree that a more conclusive error message would be helpful.

Re: My workaround experience - two solutions, one is prefera
James, even though this problem has obviously been known for quite some time (the specific bug 352694 for Thunderbird was issued well before the 2.0.0.0 release), it catches many people by surprise. This was the case in April with the first 2.0 release, and now again with the 1.5.0.12 to 2.0.0.6 transition. I didn't know about those two older bug reports either before you posted them. Thus, no need for bjkeefe to feel sorry...James wrote:This has been in similar fashion on Thunderbird/Firefox for some four or so years now due to the TNT type of graphics cards and range of certain driver versions that had this glitch.
The amazing thing is that the official Mozilla release notes don't list this in their known issues section along with a pointer to the options how to resolve it. Given the frequency this shows up on the forums here, this would help making things easier for those affected. I'm aware that MZ is not Mozilla, any way to drop them a note? (they in turn refer to the MZ forums for support, going in circles here...)

Well the glitch with the toolbar icons on Firefox/Thunderbird was not as known as I have been pretty much the only one that has recognized the bug when there were the occasional posts on it a few years back, then there were hardly any posts about this sort of glitch until the tabs glitch in Firefox 2 and this Thunderbird 2 problem came about in last months.
Not sure who to contact at the moment about getting this problem and the fix(s) added as you could ask at irc.mozilla.org or file a bug to get the page updated.

James, thanks - I didn't know the "most active bugs" function in bugzilla yet, that's useful. Also, it looks like the release notes are supposed to amended soon, given Scott's comment, which will hopefully help a little. https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.c ... 52694#c100

Nvidia drivers solved it for me....
I had the same problem with the zebra striping causing superimposed test in the message list pane (the list with sender, subject, and other status info for messages in the folder being viewed). Updating my display driver did it for me. This was on a Dell Inspiron 8200 laptop with a Nvidia GeForce 2Go driver currently installed. Before that, I think the driver was something generic.

The link is on https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/ as the Hot Bugs (most commonly filed recently) link.
Missed the comment by Scott as I suppose he could have been one to mention this to perhaps, though now the Known Issues may be getting updated with this soon thanks to him.

Right under my nose, thus the least expected place ...
There is also a suggestion in another thread to create a sticky note on this issue, http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?t=577075 (page 2)
Edit: Daifne took care of it, http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic ... 12#3018111

The change to video card acceleration rate worked for me as well. I am running a Dell Inspiron 8100 with an Nvidia GForce 2Go card. This bug was driving me crazy. Thanks so much for the fix.
