Thunderbird freezes when adding attachment

Today I find that, in "Compose", whenever I click on the "attach" icon the icon greys out and Thunderbird freezes. I have to close the application and relaunch but the same happens every time.

I've been using Thunderbird for about a year without problems. I last sent an email with an attachment on 14th December, again without problems.

I'm using Thunderbird version (20071031) with Windows XP SP2.
If it's relevant I have Thunderbird installed via Portable Apps. It's on my hard drive but I've set it up that way so that I can move my email onto a flash drive and take it with me when I go on holiday.

I would be grateful for any suggestions.

Filter the Config Editor for attach.dir, and reset the preference.

Many thanks, Rod, for your very prompt response.

Thanks for the advice! Mine was trying to use network drive folder which was inaccessible. TB froze because of this. Setting mail.compose.attach.dir setting to a local folder fixed the problem. Interestingly, this stores the path the file was attached the last time. Unfortunately, it doesn't check whether the folder exists. Probably, that causes the problem.

Thanks for the input, VVS, but you're replied to a thread that died out three years ago.
