How to Remove Quotes (the blue bars) when replying to emails

Post by devadeva »

Hello,

I don't want the Quotes to be surrounded with the the blue bar when I am replying to emails. How do I do that

It has only 3 options "start my reply above the quote", "start my reply below the quote" and "select the quote".

In addition,

I think we should have option to set how the "quote" is formatted like in outlook
It should give options like weather I want to add any character before each line (ex: ">") , tab etc.,

Thanks

Those quote characters are actually a standardized way to identify a quote from the original message and to display it respectively. The number of '>' at the beginning also allows to distinguish between the different levels of replies (quote within a quote; ok, this could be accomplished with any character). Thus, it's definitely not a bug to be in compliance with a standard (you posted this in TB Bugs).

Anyway, see http://kb.mozillazine.org/Quote_bars for details, and it has a link to an extension (QuoteAndComposeManager) you can install to modify the quoting behavior on outgoing messages.

Ok, no problem on my end. I was just a bit irritated to find this in the "Bugs" category. Such things happen... :-)

Did this ever get resolved? I have the same problem.

Why is this so difficult for Thunderbird? It's annoying.

The Internet standard for quoting is annoying? It's more annoying to me if someone removes them. I want to be able to see, at a glance, what is part of the quoted material and what's new.

There is nothing to be "fixed" here. On the contrary, many e-mail clients and webmail programs rely on the '>' character to identify quoted text in replies.

I'm not suggesting that Thunderbird remove the bars as a feature. I'm suggesting giving users the option to have or not have bars/quoted text.

You can usually see the original message below the header line "-----Original Message-----". That's all I need. Much easier to read when you have many replies within the same email.

Typical header:

My reply text.

-----Original Message-----
From: abc@xyz.com
Sent: Tuesday, July 01, 2008 7:39 AM
To: Jake
Subject: Thunderbird

Original email message text.

Ok, so that's the "business-style" quoting that Lotus and Microsoft introduced. This is available as an extension linked to from the article below (that server appears to be currently down though, but you can try later):

http://kb.mozillazine.org/Reply_header_ ... Extensions

P.S.: This is a nice tutorial on the different quoting styles, http://mailformat.dan.info/quoting/

So let me get this straight:

Outlook can do it, it's built right in to iDevices, but Thunderbird won't let the user control quote level. At least, I haven't found it.

Even NestedQuoteRemover will only remove down to one quote- arbitrarily, IMO.

And that's okay. Only silly newbies don't like quotes. </sarcasm>

Well, I'd like to control quote level. I often resend various bits of messages and don't appreciate Thunderbird inserting a bunch of quotes in what should be a professional business email, not some geeky usenet discussion from 1995. Yes, I was there.

"It's a feature- not a bug!" How very Microsoft.

Sooner than later, please.

Solution:

Install the "Stationery" extension. This allows you to edit the raw HTML of the message.

In HTML edit, remove the <blockquote...> and </blockquote> tags.

This will remove the quote bar in a HTML message.

Interestingly, this very old thread ranks first on Google (2013) when checking for this particular bug.

It's not ideal, I know, but it does work.
