multiple outgoing servers

Thunderbird gives the "advanced" option of specifying multiple smtp severs for possible use, while also specifying a default. Unfortunately, when an additional server is added, the old remains the one used, even when the new one is given default status. Only deleting the old one and restarting Thunderbird results in using the new one.

Is there a way to rectify this?
