How do I search with the enter key instead of search button

Post by John Phoenix »

I looked around the forum and found this answer back from 2007

" Post Posted April 16th, 2007, 3:25 am
Try prefs -> navigator -> smart browsing -> enable internet keywords.

Now (as long as your search is more than one word) you should just be able to enter your search term into the location bar and press enter. If your term is only one word, you still have to press up to highlight the search tab."

viewtopic.php?f=4&t=539540

But there is no option like this in Seamonkey 2.7. I went looking around in preferences and found under Location bar " Perform a search when entered text is not a web location." The box is Checked. This leads me to believe when I type anything into the location bar and hit Enter, it will do the search instead of me having to hit the search button.

It doesn't do the search. I get a popup saying the entered text is not a valid URL.

Is this a bug in 2.7 not working like it's supposed to?

Otherwise.. is there another workaround.. how do i search my text string via my chosen search engine (Start Page) by hitting Enter instead of hitting the Search button next to the location bar?

Thanks.

Make sure the referenced setting is enabled, viewtopic.php?p=10960961#p10960961.

The reference you speak of and linked to " Edit | Preferences -> Browser => Location Bar ==> Unknown Locations, Perform a web search when entered text is not a web location"

is the same one I mentioned above. I already stated this IS enabled ( there is a check mark in the box) .. but it does not work.

Any other ideas? Perhaps it does not work because it is a bug in 2.7?

It does works in 2.7.

Help | Restart with Add-on disabled?

If that doesn't work, then try that along with having plugins disabled.

If that doesn't work, then as a test try a new, clean Profile.

It doesn't work for me in 2.7 with a single word. I don't think this worked in previous versions either. It always took me to http://dnssearch.rr.com/index.php?origU ... reeedd/&r= (I use Road Runner cable).

I have to press the Up or Down arrow to highlight Search Google for .....

I'll try it with Add-ons disabled and see what happens.

Edit: Same with Add-ons disabled (Safe Mode).

Isn't that what John Phoenix is asking about?

He did post this, so I assume he knows it needs to be two words minimum.

Now (as long as your search is more than one word) ...

With one word, an Up_arrow, twice, will leave you at the "Search" option.

My search string is always longer than one word. I was aware of the one word limit. But I can type "Hey Seamonkey, search this string !" and I still get the pop up.

TheRube, if it works for you in 2.7 then something must be messed up with my install.. I dunno.. i will try disabling add-ons now and see if it helps.. i'll report back.

tried and nope.. with all add-ons disables and in safe mode this will not work either.

Are you sure you have 2.7? They came out with 2.6 then suddenly in a very short time came out with 2.7.

Ztruker, can you also verify that it works for you in 2.7? -- or anyone else??

It certainly works for me on 2.7 - I use this all the time. Do you have the pref "Browser -> Location Bar -> Unknown Locations -> Perform a web search when entered text is not a web location" ticked?

Thanks folks. i think i found the problem..

Made a new profile and tested it with Google and it worked. i then installed the search plugin for StartPage.com and it did not work. I installed the search plugin for Scroggle.com and it also did not work.. I'd get the popup saying invalid URL.

I HAVE to use either StartPage or Scroogle.com's search abilities because they are secure and do not record cookies and info like the Evil Google does. They are Google searches without all the Bad Google stuff Google adds to the search engine.

So.. what type of problem is this.. is it a Seamonkey problem or a StartPage and Scroogle plugin problem? Whats my best way of getting this fixed - request of Scroogle and Startpage that they re-make their plugins for Seamonkey?

You may need to do this. After doing the following i am able to do secure / https search using startpage
Excerpt from https://eu3.startpage.com/uk/company-faq.html#q9

Code: Select all

Q: Can I also use Startpage through the Firefox or SeaMonkey or Flock Internet Keywords search?
Using the Firefox or SeaMonkey or Flock browser it is possible to perform a web search just by entering your search term into the Location Bar and hitting "enter".
By default this search takes place on Google, but you can easily change it to Startpage. Here's how:
*NOTE: Please make sure to follow the below directions exactly, as changing the "about:config" preferences can influence the behaviour of your browser negatively.
Type 'about:config' in the browser location bar and hit 'enter'.
Accept the warning message to be careful.
Enter 'keyword.URL' in the filter on top of the page.
Double-click on the 'keyword.URL'- line that shows up.
In the pop-up window replace the Google string with: https://startpage.com/do/search?language=english_uk&cat=web&query=
    Click on 'OK'.
    Close the window or tab.
