Auto Fit Image to Mail Preview Pane

Post by smsmith »

In one of the recent Thunderbird updates, images in the mail preview pane (and presumably a new message tab/window) auto resize to fit the width of the window if the image is too wide. The height is appropriately scaled. I really like this and was wondering if maybe it was just a variable/preference that was flipped or if it is a feature that hasn't yet landed in SM.

Any thoughts?

Thanks, I never knew that existed.

There is no preference to toggle the shrinktofit feature in Thunderbird.

AFAICT, the shrinktofit feature is not available in SeaMonkey.

I can tell you that images attached to e-mails auto-resize. Don't know about inline images.
But then again, I may be wrong.

I just checked the DOM Inspector. An e-mail that has an oversize image attachment has a class .moz-attached-image on the image. The attribute on the class is [isshrunk="true"] with maxwidth set to 100% when the image is shrunk to fit the window width. When the image is allowed to overflow the window, the attribute changes to [overflowing="true"] and there's no maxwidth property on it.

I found the preference for it in about:config, mail.enable_automatic_image_resizing.
But then again, I may be wrong.
