Future of XUL and XPCOM based add-ons

Post by Sanny »

In light of Mozilla plans for Firefox, to retire the current add-ons framework, which will deprecate xul and XPCOM based add-ons, and the new multi-process direction etc:

What direction will SeaMonkey take? Are there any plans? Where can we see some info about future plans for SeaMonkey?

If this is not the place to ask, where is the actual place that SeaMonkey developers will respond?

I started a discussion on Google Groups, but there's not much response:

If Mozilla really does go this way, it's likely the end of SeaMonkey. The SeaMonkey development team is too small to maintain XUL/Gecko all by themselves and is definitely too small to completely rewrite everything for Servo. This is all assuming that Mozilla is competent enough to actually pull off the Servo switch, and if it is, that Firefox will actually survive as a product worth supporting or using afterwords.
Tip of the day: If it has "toolbar" in the name, it's crap.

That's my fear too. That SeaMonkey will follow these changes, which would mean it's end, in terms of user-base.

I actually got some response here.

Thanks for the link. Sad indeed.
