Windows Defender Antivirus Warning

Post by Dritz »

Hi,
I'm using SM 2.49.3 on Windows 10. Windows Defender is my antivirus program.

There's a website that I have been visiting almost daily for years using SM. All of a sudden, when I go to the website using SM I get a "threats found" warning via Windows Defender indicating a "Trojan:JS/Fish". When I use other browsers like Chrome and MS Edge, there are no warnings, which of course makes me think somehow it's a SM related issue. I have cleared the cache in SM and rebooted but it persists. BTW, I also contacted the webmaster for the website and they've had no problems on their end. Any suggestions? I'm not a complete novice but I'm also not a techie so I hope I can keep up with any ideas. Thanks! :)

  • You can analyze, that website, with VirusTotal to see if there's any real threat.

    Cheers! 8-)

There's a website
URL?

Restart SeaMonkey in Safe Mode & see if the issue persists?

Eltxolo,
Thanks for that website! I checked the URL and it came up "clean". So I still don't get it. I will try SM in safe mode and see what happens. Thanks!

The same threat is reported by Windows Defender when that site is visited using Firefox and Vivaldi. As the OP stated, the warning doesn't appear when the site is visited using Edge.

Dan,
How strange! And this just started so for years it hasn't been a problem with SeaMonkey. I wonder what changed? So, it sounds like I can just ignore the warning? I've just been quarantining them. And most of the time I'm going on to the website via an Email with an included link. But whether I go in via a link or just the website itself, it's a problem. Thanks for the info! Debbie

Many sites alter what they send you depending on what they detect as the browser you are using. It is quite likely that your are receiving a false positive in Windows Defender, but it is not surprising that it might happen with one broswer and not another.

Really Debbie?

Not the best way to go.
You know what they say..."Never click a link in an email, even if you know who it's from."
Email addys can be spoofed & you could end up at "another" site.
Best to ask the original sender if they actually sent the email & link before clicking it.

(Always choose the "Custom" Install.)

Nothing new for the occasional false positive with SeaMonkey as Norton/Symantec has been singled out for several years now under Known Issues in the Release Notes https://www.seamonkey-project.org/relea ... key2.49.3/
