Stop mail from downloading when Browser open?

With 1.1.xx mail was only downloaded when the Mail window was open. With 2.0, it seems that mail is downloaded as soon as a Browser window is opened, without specifically opening the Mail window. Is there any way to get it to stop doing this, and behave like 1.1.xx, where mail was only downloaded with the Mail window open? I use MailWasher to deal with spam, and MW keeps being bypassed by SM.

Edit>Preferences>Mail&Newsgroups>check the "Only check for new mail after opening Mail&Newsgroups" under General setting category
