I think that somewhere in the current SeaMonkey documentation there's a Chatzilla reference or maybe even a description that led me to confuse IM and IRC. But unfortunately, at the moment I can't remember where that would be.

Netscape 7 (and probably earlier versions) did have an IM client.
It was a separate component though, not integrated into the Chat client.

Yes, and that's why in SeaMonkey there's a missing menu item that should have the Ctrl+3 keyboard shortcut.
