Hi there!

I would like to run SeaMonkey on fresh new Ubuntu 12.04. I can't install it through Ubuntu Software Center utility.
Also if I run package downloaded from the site I get the error:

Code: Select all
seamonkey-bin: error while loading shared libraries: libxul.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

Please help.

Get it from http://www.seamonkey-project.org/releases/
Unpack it with a right-click and "extract here".
then, sudo mv seamonkey /usr/local to move the unpacked folder
and run it with
/usr/local/seamonkey/seamonkey

If you want to move it to the launcher,
install alacarte (Main Menu) from USC. That will help you make a launcher for the left panel of Unity.
Icons are here: /usr/local/seamonkey/chrome/icons/default.png

Run the seamokey script not the seamonkey-bin

./seamonkey

Also if you want to make it easy with read/write permissions for software updates put the SeaMonkey folder in home and not say "usr" as suggested above as it is root.

Thank you very much James, the problem was in wrong file to run: I tried 'seamonkey-bin'. The 'seamonkey' script runs perfectly.

I followed the ubuntu 12.04 directions on seamonkey and it installed just fine for me, but since that first time I cannot reopen sea monkey. I tried to remove and reinstall and when i run the sea monkey script ./seamonkey in the seamonkey directory:
owner@ubuntu:~/Downloads/seamonkey2/seamonkey$ ./seamonkey

I get the following error:
./seamonkey-bin: error while loading shared libraries: libdbus-glib-1.so.2: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

Like i said it worked once the very first time but is not working anymore.

Can I please get a step-by-step instruction on 'How to install Seamonkey on Precise'?

(Sorry, I'm a big-time newbie in Linux. Just recently switched from Windows.)

Thanks in advanced!

A better way to install seamonkey is through a PPA (Personal Package Archives). That way, seamonkey will appear in the software center, you get updates, and you can remove it through the software center. Instructions:

- Open software center
- go Edit -> software sources
- click on tab "Other software"
- click on Add...
- enter ppa:joe-nationnet/seamonkey-dev

confirm everything and soon, seamonkey will appear in the software center.

I tried this, but no luck. SeaMonkey appears in the Software Center, but has no "install" option.

If I click "More Info", it says not found. Also, the brief description there refers to email, not browser?!?

Roger,

I confirmed that. Apparently, software center does not update the software list after you add a new PPA. I consider this a bug and I will report it to Ubuntu.

Here is how you can still make this work:
- add the PPA as stated above
- open a terminal
- issue the command: sudo apt-get update
- then try again with software center.

I just tried that and it works.

A note: Disappointing that the updating of software sources does not work as expected in software center. Perhaps calling up the Update Manager and clicking on Check would trigger an update?

I got it installed, but not sure I'm set up correctly for updates.

My guess is:
Check if ppa:joe-nationnet/seamonkey-dev is in place?

Just checked, it won't accept it as it is. It seems to want the full address. I tried adding the http:// - no go.

So how do I get set up for updates?

Hi Roger,

looks like you've got it running now. If you installed it from the PPA, Ubuntu will automatically check for updates, notify, and install at your request.
Here's how you can check:
- go to software center
- go to Edit -> Software Sources
- click on Other Software tab
- if http://ppa.launchpad.net/joe-nationnet/ ... dev/ubuntu precise main is checked, then you will get updates.

If you want to know when the last update was released (and learn more about the PPA), go to
https://launchpad.net/~joe-nationnet/+archive/seamonkey-dev

Glad to hear it worked for you too, barankai!

SeaMonkey has not been on this computer.
I downloaded SeaMonkey 2.11 from the SeaMonkey project(Linux OS) and want to see if it will actually install.
I don't give up on stuff easily. ;)
What would be the best way of doing this?
I don't want to wind up with an older version of SeaMonkey.
Thanks! :)
