Cannot use keyboard with local SWF files

Post by barbaz »

SeaMonkey '2.35pre' (based on Firefox 38.0.1)
Mac OS X 10.7 'Lion'
Shockwave Flash 17.0.0.134

I can't use the keyboard with some local (file://...) SWF files anymore. The SWF doesn't respond to the keyboard.
If I open the exact same SWF online (http://...) the keyboard works fine.
Makes no difference whether they're embedded or just opened.

Example SWF where I can reproduce the problem: Cubefield
(In case it's different now, the sha1 checksum of my cubefield.swf is bf2c252c4beb8120c2d00b19c7cad92e6ae85911 .)

Judging from the Flash changelog, updating Flash probably won't help...

If I try it in a clean profile, I do not have the same problem - the keyboard works even on local SWF files.

I'm posting this now because I'm not sure I'll figure this out, and even if I do, the solution might help someone else when SeaMonkey 2.35 is officially released. I can't use all my usual per-profile diagnostic procedures (meaning, Safe Mode followed by various forms of profile butchery) given that this is *not* a disposable environment...
I'll see if copying my whole profile to a second profile will do.

EDIT OK, sort of solved, on a whim: the problem is related to my choice to set Flash to "Ask to Activate". If I pick "Always Activate" it works. Why?
EDIT2 Simple workaround: Don't click on the placeholder, go to the address bar, click the doorhanger, click "Activate"... :-k

Any insights why this is now the case would be appreciated. Should I file a bug?

EDIT3 RattyAway confirmed that this sounds buggy, so https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1166798

EDIT4 I think it should be noted here that I use NoScript and I Allow file://, in case it's relevant to why this works online for me.

On some websites Flash doesn't work right with Ask to Activate... that's not specific to any version of Fx/SM though.
Tip of the day: If it has "toolbar" in the name, it's crap.
