I recently noticed that the Mail side bar indicates a number of unread email items [ eg 5 ].
When I open the Inbox tab it shows fewer emails than I expect [ eg 2 v/s 5].
If I go to View Unread it will show all of the unread [eg 5 ] with times and the usual info, but they will not show up on the Inbox tab.
The problem would appear to be new, but I cannot guaranty that.
I have not changed any settings in Email for a long time, so I have not gone easter egging to experiment.
Is this a setting gone west, or a new, unadvertised feature of SeaMonkey?
Thanks
RM

Quite likely it's neither one.
How is that account set up in SeaMonkey, as a POP or IMAP type account?
Do you regularly compact the message folders? http://kb.mozillazine.org/Thunderbird_: ... ng_Folders

Re: sea monkey mail loses new mail
The account is POP to my Gmail account, and is compacted about once a week.
I just tried compacting the inbox and the results are exactly as before - One visible message with 4 indicated on the side bar. 4 visible when I select View Unread.

First backup your profile -- http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_backup
Close SeaMonkey and navigate to your Profile Folder ( http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_Folder ). Find the files with the extension msf, such as Inbox.msf. Note that there will be sets of two files with the name but only one of these will have the MSF extension. Delete the files with the MSF extension. Restart SeaMonkey, compact all folders, and see if things are back to normal. Note that the MSF files do NOT contain your messages. They are, for lack of a better term, an index file and will be recreated by Thunderbird as required.
If this procedure provides no improvement, see this link -- http://kb.mozillazine.org/Recover_messa ... upt_folder

Re: sea monkey mail loses new mail
This situation caused me to finally build a new profile and clean up my inbox. Dumping a lot of messages seemed to make the problem go away, but I can't guaranty that.
in any event mail in the new profile seems OK. If it comes back again I will come looking for help again.
Dan, thanks for the advice and particularly the references.
As a an aside: I had problems getting passwords across to the new profile. By looking in a non Mozilla source I found out that I needed to bring the logins.json file over. The Mozilla page lists lots of good stuff, but Logins.json is not mentioned [ or I missed it ]. Who do I write to to get the info updated so other people can get it right the first time thru?
Thanks again
