Seamonkey 2.46 won't work on Windows XP Service Pack 3

Post by finn111 »

Seamonkey 2.46 won't work on Windows XP Service Pack 3. This morning when I clicked on my Seamonkey icon a window poped telling me that updates were being installed. After it was done I tried to start Seamonkey and I got a memory address error. So I downloaded Seamonkey 2.46 and uninstalled what I had and tried to do a clean fresh install of 2.46. I got an error message that for Windows XP it requires Service Pack 2 and I have Service Pack 3. All of the newer Seamonkey updates up to 2.50a1 give me the same result. Is this a know issue? Will XP be supported? How do I prevent automatic updates until this is fixed?

Is there a work around for this error with XP?

It is possible on (very) old hardware:

The error message is misleading. This is likely because you CPU is too old and does not support the SSE2 instruction set. No workaround. Only the Linux version supports these old CPUs for now till 2.49.

So it will eventually be supported again starting with 2.49? I have a newer PC dual 64 CPU running windows 10 Pro that I can stop testing and use as my main PC but I think that there are issues with 64 bit Seamonkey is that correct?

No. On Linux starting with 2.49 SSE2 is mandatory too.

There is no official 64 Bit SeaMonkey for Windows available but the 32 bit version will just work fine.

You can use Adrians unofficial 64 bit version too which is already at 2.47:

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/yo ... -supported

On Windows, Gecko 49.0 which is what Firefox 49.0 and SeaMonkey 2.46 uses no longer works on older CPU's that does not support SSE2.

https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/49.0/releasenotes/
Ended Firefox for Windows support for SSE processors
Firefox version 53.0 (Gecko 53) and later on Linux will no longer support SSE also.

please run the CPU-Z tool and check if your CPU chip has SSE2 support {"SSE2" should appear in the Instructions section of CPU-Z; if it's not there, then your CPU does not have the necessary SSE2 instruction set to run Seamonkey 2.46]
I ran SM 2.46 on a friend's WinXP SP3 Media Center PC [an eMachines T5048 computer with an Intel Pentium 4 (661) chip] and it installed & ran just fine.

I have an AMD 3000+ CPU from 2003. I expect it is time to put it out to pasture.

How can I prevent seamonkey from automatically downloading and installing 2.60? Since I can't use it I don't want it trashing me again it just happened the second time. Is there a config setting?

I can't say specifically what your system's problems are but I can DEFINITELY CONFIRM that SM 2.46 is compatible with and works perfectly fine with Win-XP Pro SP-3 when set up properly. While SM at some point will drop debug support for Win XP we are not quite there yet. Usually, the best way to upgrade to a new version of SM is to completely uninstall the old version and install the new version from scratch, which is what I do everytime I upgrade to a new SM version (including SM 2.46), and the process has never once failed, the new installation always works pretty much perfectly right off the bat after the new version is installed. User data files will still be recognized and retained from the previous version unless you use the SM profile manager to delete existing profiles and associated data files.

We are not yet to the XP issue. (That is coming).
As pointed out above, it is the lack of SSE2 support in the users CPU.
Fire 750, bring back 250.

webmoebius, you may want to read past the OP. It was due to using a older CPU from AMD that does not support SSE2 and not due to using WinXP SP3.

So that's why. Mozilla continues to disappoint me with their bone-headed decisions.
