Maybe there's a hilarious story behind the DuckDuckGo coup?...

Not really. DuckDuckGo is the Default Search Engine for SeaMonkey. A Mozilla update removed the default search engine and linked it to the current search engine. A bug was filed and a workaround in both the bug and release notes provided. Bug not important enough to fix it fast for 2.46 with the available manpower. Bug finally fixed. End of story.

Didn't mean to sound glib -- I had never seen that search engine. My choice used to be AltaVista.
I appreciate all the hard work that keeps the legacy of Netscape alive. Thanks!

That "DuckDuckGo" thing stinks! At first, I thought some spyware had crept in. Was this a bug, or on purpose?

"Known Issues
This list covers some of the known problems with SeaMonkey 2.46. Please read this before reporting any new bugs.

Setting the default search engine no longer works. This is tracked in (bug 1265881). One workaround is to open the sidebar, change the search engine there and then also immediately do a search there to set it...."

It was on purpose. Change was actually made in late 2015: Bug 1190185

Why not just use the search bar? Whatever search engine you have selected will be used there. I have not seen any evidence of a default search engine there in quite some time.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DuckDuckGo

"...DuckDuckGo positions itself as a search engine that puts privacy first and as such it does not store IP addresses, does not log user information and uses cookies only when needed. Weinberg states "By default, DuckDuckGo does not collect or share personal information. That is our privacy policy in a nutshell." However, they do maintain logs of all search terms used.[45]..."

While I still use google mostly I also use DuckDuckGo more and more. The google results become more and more useless. Regional search results in the wrong language only useful if you are a mindless shopping drone.
