I have used seamonkey exclusively since netscape. In the past week, something has gone wrong. I can recieve emails but cannot send them. I have tried a few set ups with the following results.

STARTTLS, PORT 587 wrote:Sending of the message failed.
An error occurred while sending mail: Unable to establish a secure link with Outgoing server (SMTP) mail.example.com using STARTTLS since it doesn't advertise that feature. Switch off STARTTLS for this server or contact your service provider.

SSL/TLS, PORT 465 - immediate response wrote:Sending of the message failed.
The message could not be sent because the connection to Outgoing server (SMTP) mail.example.com timed out. Try again

SSL/TLS, PORT 587 - delayed response wrote:Sending of the message failed.
The message could not be sent because the connection to Outgoing server (SMTP) mail.example.com was lost in the middle of the transaction. Try again.

verifier.port25.com says the server configuration is fine.

Suggestions? Thank you.

It's a private, not a commercial, server.

SMTP settings can be found in SeaMonkey using menu path Window->Mail & News Groups->Edit->Mail & Newsgroups Account Settings->(left hand pane) Outgoing Server (SMTP)->click on the account name on the right->click on "Edit".
Try changing the port number to 465 and the Connection Security option to SSL/TLS.

Yes. As noted above.

SSL/TLS, PORT 465 - immediate response :
Sending of the message failed.
The message could not be sent because the connection to Outgoing server (SMTP) mail.example.com timed out. Try again

And port 465 is open.

This is what has me stumped. I can find no reason it shouldn't work. Obviously, there has to be something but beats me what it is.

Hello Bobby,

What do you have as your User Name for both Outgoing (SMTP) and Incoming (POP) email? If it is just the part of your email address before the '@' symbol, change it to your complete email address.

Regards,

Dave.

Here's the update.

There was a minor 'Let's Encrypt' misconfiguration on the server. Of the messages listed above, only the first was in the right ballpark - tho hardly helpful in tracking down the problem (something I've found to be the rule rather than the exception for email configuration). Either way, the good news is that SeaMonkey is as solid as it's ever been. Thanks to everybody for your feedback and suggestions; they definitely helped track this one down.

PS. Thank you, TPR75, for the link to the update. I will surely take advantage of it.

Thanks for the update. Always useful to know how things resolve.
