Upgrading 2.46 to Latest SM

Post by Bob Fam1 »

I have 2.46 now. I have read all of the info about upgrading and making a copy of my profile first. I am confused as how to upgrade. I want to retain all my bookmarks, cookies, e-mail, passwords, addresses, etc.

Can someone please explain the procedure in step by step easily understood instructions.

I'd sure appreciate it. Thanks, Bob.

In my personal experience, you can simply install the new version 2.53.9.1 directly over the old 2.46, as usual, and all of your "bookmarks, cookies, e-mail, passwords, addresses, etc.", will be there as they were for previous updates.

I believe the profile backup is always a good idea, as sometimes things do go wrong, but in all my years of using netscape thru various other names thru seamonkey, nothing bad ever happened.

If you want to install 64-bit over 32-bit, you should un-install the 32bit version first.

Thanks for the info. How do I determine if mine is a 32 bit or 64 bit version?

There is so much info about updating the old version I was afraid I'd loose everything. Bob.

Longer but safe road to latest SeaMonkey.

1) Backup of your SeaMonkey profile:

Code: Select all

%APPDATA%\Mozilla\SeaMonkey\
You can use some archiver, e.g. free 7-Zip:
https://www.7-zip.org/

2) update to SeaMonkey 2.49.5:
https://archive.mozilla.org/pub/seamonk ... es/2.49.5/

3) check if everything works and make backup again

4) update to latest SeaMonkey 2.53.*:
https://www.seamonkey-project.org/releases/

32-bit or 64-bit?
Go to: Menu -> Help -> About SeaMonkey
If you can see this

Code: Select all

Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:49.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/49.0 SeaMonkey/2.46
(and you didn't messed with UA) it means you have 32-bit SeaMonkey under 64-bit Windows 7.
Profile is independent so you can uninstall 32-bit 2.46, install 64-bit 2.49.5 and then 64-bit 2.53.9.1. But remember! There is no (easy) way back.

Warning for old plugins and extensions! Not all extensions will work (at least without tweaking) and practically you can forgot about plugins (Java, Flash and others).

While I too recommend going thru 2.49.5 directly from 2.46 should be fine. I am sure I tested this. Before updating make a profile backup and if you have set a master password remove it for the upgrade and reapply later again. Delete key3.db and cert8.db after the update to 2.53 from your profile. 2.46 Windows was not provided as 64 bit so uninstall if first and reboot before installing the x64.

Thanks a lot for all of you that responded and helped me. The upgrade went thru with no problems. I now have 2.53.9 with no problems.

I went to 2.49.5 first and then to the final version. I have all of my saved files.

Best regards to all, Bob.

Hi I'm exactely as you was and ready to follow the same road you was instructed.
Only a little thing is unclear for me: did you uninstalled older 2.46 as frg and Rob_S suggested or simply put the intermediate 2.49.5 over the 2.46?
After multiple backups of course :-)

Thank you in advance.

SeaMonkey 2.46 is 32-bit only while 2.49.5 and newer are 64-bit too. If you have 64-bit OS (equal or newer than Win7) then you can install 64-bit SeaMonkey. In this case you MUST uninstall 2.46 first. Your profile will stay safe but backup is highly recommended.

May be helpful in case of troubles.

I did all the steps days ago, but 2.53.10.2 was crashing as I discussed here (with SOLVED details): viewtopic.php?f=40&t=3085444&p=14914312#p14914312
