Sites No Longer Support Seamonkey

I have SM 2.53.9.1.

There are several sites that say they don't support SM anymore.

I have read a lot of the info about this subject and am still confused.

Can I change the User Agent to say Firefox? If so how exactly.

If it is changed to say Firefox will SM work in all respects after the change?

Are there any other problems if it is changed?

If I upgrade to a newer version when it's available will it revert me back to the old User Agent?

Mine says general.useragent.site_specific_overrides;true.

Is that the line I have to modify?

If so, how do I do it?

Go to about:config and right click and choose new string. There you first add the first line, then add the second line.

That sure is simple. I wish the previous sites I have visited about the problem would have explained it that way.

Not all of us knows all the details about editing about:config.

That simple fact that this works ... anywhere ... proves that the whole 'update your browser for security' nonsense is just that ... nonsense. There is no reason at all for any site to sniff and try to exclude any browser.

It does not work "everywhere".
Updating for security reasons is not "nonsense".

Sites do sniff, so unless you convince them otherwise, you just have to deal with it.

There is no "fix", there might (or might not) be a workaround by changing a passed UA string.

We are afforded the ability to change a UA globally or site specific.
(IMO, well for me, for the odd sites [that I run into], site specific is the better route.)

In those cases the "use a newer browser" message is probably displayed because the site owners don't want the hassle of testing their site with older browsers. So they browser sniff and put up that warning so that IF something breaks, they can say they warned you.

What's funny [in my case] is that the two sites that put up a silly 'outdated browser' warning, ADT and Bank of America, both work absolutely FINE with SM. It's *other* sites, sites that don't warn me about using an outdated browser, that just don't work with it any more. I've posted about this in General--the very short version is that American Express basically doesn't work any more with SM. Basic stuff, like viewing my accounts, still works, but trying to *do* anything, like redeem rewards, fails 100% of the time now. Amex is just one example....unfortunately, there are many others that simply don't work any more.
