SM version 2.53.13 crashes upon start up

Post by Stereodoc »

I can't get to any profile. Get the bug reporter instead. If I do a system restore and revert back to 2.53.12 SM works OK.

Also, how does one turn off SM automatic updates?

Uncheck in Preferences (Advanced/Software Installation) automatically download and install the update.

You are using the x86 version under Windows 10? Didn't test this for sure but shouldn't crash. My advice. uninstall and install the x64.

I also keep using x86 version (now on 2.53.14b1) on fully updated windows 10 (8 gb ram) laptop, with no startup issues, as it seems to hog a bit less ram (subjectively speaking - no actual measured data)

Most 64bit programs appear to me to use more ram.

A system restore also probably resets your profile, so might be worth trying again to install latest version???

(Does SeaMonkey still log crash reports, or do I just not have any on my end?)

From 2.53.12, go to, about:crashes.

Do any crash reports show up?
If so, post some of the last few of their URLs.

With .13, if you attempted to start up in Safe Mode (seamonkey.exe -safe-mode, or otherwise) did that work?
Fire 750, bring back 250.

this is a 32 bit version on Win 7. Sorry for the lack of info before.

so I turned off auto updates and reverted back to 2.53.12 and all is working.

My win10 machines are OK with 2.53.13.

i have not tried Safe Mode. I will try this evening. Stand by.

I'm using 64-bit SeaMonkey under 64-bit Windows 7 Professional/Ultimate (ESU) and it works correct (including latest 2.53.13 version).

For test you can create TEST profile and for test you can set it as default. Then you'll be able to check if new profile will crash at start.

Mentioned "safe mode" will disable non-standard themes and all extensions/add-ons. You can try it too to check if one of them is outdated (not compatible with latest version).

Well can not reproduce so try in safe mode. Only in a vm because too lazy to install the x86 in my real 7 x64 installation. If you have a crash id I can ask ewong for the details. Server interface page is down currently.

As for the ram issue. Yes x86 uses a bit less during startup but if it needs more you will suffer at some point. And while I run the x64 all the time I rarely build or test the x86 any longer. x64 is the only future.

OK. rereading my earlier post, I neglected to mention that the PC is a 32bit PC running 32bit Win7 Pro and the 32bit version of SM.

So trying again, I downloaded 2.53.13 and installed it. It crashed and the Crash Reporter popped up after it tried to restart. Next I tried in safe mode and got the same thing.

I am unable to start SM to create a new profile and just the same can't get to any of the other profiles. So I'm back to 2.53.12 for the time being.

Fully patched with SP1 and latest official fixes which should include SHA-2 support?

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/top ... f9aa5f8339

Older VS2015 runtime installed by chance? SeaMonkey 2.53.13 has the latest VS2019 runtime in and this might break if the system is not up to date I think. The runtime files no longer work on XP e.g.

I switched 2.53.12 already to SHA-2 so sonder if it is the runtime. My 7 x86 vm works fine but is up to date with ESU patches.

Also maybe try the latest version from Bill: https://www.wg9s.com/comm-253/

Later clang compiler and he bundles the VS2017 runtime.

It is still profile compatible with 2.53.13 and a downgrade should not be a problem at this point in time. Prerelease or not 100% stable for me and using it daily.

SHA2 updates for Win7 SP1 should include both KB4490628 & KB4474419, frg.
KB4474419 alone may not be enough and latest ESU W7 patches won't install without KB4490628 update installed first

many apps (including latest Malwarebytes app) these days are SHA2 only signed and require all the SHA2 patches for Win7

what kind of computer do you have, Stereodoc?
list specs of your computer (including CPU/{listed as "central processor"}, amount of RAM) after running a portable version of HWiNFO

AND be sure that your computer meets ALL the system requirements for Seamonkey, including the CPU/processor and that the CPU has SSE2:
Minimum Hardware
SeaMonkey on Windows needs a CPU supporting the SSE2 instruction set.

Pentium 4 1.5GHz (Recommended: Intel Core 2 Duo 1.8GHz or greater)
1 GB RAM
500 MB of free hard drive space
old processors like AMD Athlon XP don't qualify because that one does not have SSE2

I have the same/similar issue, but it started with version 2.53.12.
Any version higher than 2.53.11.1 crashes at start.
Running Win 7 x64 with latest ESU security updates. System is a Ryzen 5600X + 64GB RAM.
starting in safe mode works. starting with add-on disabled doesn't.
on two freak occurrences when i launched seamonkey immediately after installation completed, the program worked as expected. but any subsequent launch crashed. (maybe 20-30 installation attempts)
