I Can't Download Email

Post by baumgrenze »

I am running 2.53.16 under Win7/Pro x64. I have to make time to learn how to install a virtual machine on Win10 before it becomes obsolete. At 83 your perspective changes. New is not necessarily better. Familiarity breeds pleasure because you use your time productively in a familiar environment.

Today I used ZTreeWin to delete my trash.eml file, confident that it would be repopulated. Perhaps all I need do is reboot?

Presently SeaMonkey allows me to open Mail and Newsgroups, but the Inbox is empty. I cannot download email from my webmail account.

Did I do something irretrievably unacceptable?

thanks

The URLs below shows that my Trash.msf and Inbox files have been restored.

I still can't download my mail from my ISP.

What do I do next, please?

thanks

It depends. Did you made backup of your SeaMonkey user's profile? :-"

Restore backup, hahaha...

Let's make some order in your a little chaotic post.

1. Do you have SeaMonkey user's profile backup?

2. Do you have Windows restore point or something similar to backup for Windows user's profile?

3. Did you mentioned Win10 in VM for some reason or it's irrelevant in your case? If you want to copy your SeaMonkey user's profile to WIn10 under VM (for e.g. some tests) then it's possible when backup was made.

4. What did you wanted to achieve when you deleted MSF file? I saw once when dude deleted all "unnecessary" files in main folder on disk using Norton Commander. He deleted system files for DOS. It was 30 years ago when we had our first PC-ATs (i80286). Since then many things have changed but looks like you're still using some very old software under 64-bit OS. Why?

Thank you very much for replying to my request, TPR75!

I do not know if I have a SeaMonkey users profile bakcup.

I do know that with my favorite file manager I can find this file:

C:\Users\MyName\AppData\Local\Temp\-10.eml

It contains an email I received on 5/8/23, I can read the text of the message.

I found it by setting the file specification to *mail*.* after searching C:\Users\MyName\AppData\Local

When I open my PopMail folder I am told there are 10399 messages. The Thread Pane is empty and the Message Pane welcomes me to SeaMonkey Mail and News Groups. When I attempt to Get New Messages nothing happens.

I have it setup in Classic Mode with all three panes open.

What do I do to get messages to open in the Thread and Message panes?

Yes, the machine is running under Win7/Pro x64 with the most recent version of SM..

thank you

Whatever you'll do next first make backup. Entire "SeaMonkey" folder here:

Code: Select all

%APPDATA%\Mozilla\
You can use system ZIP function (built-in Win7) or dedicated software:

There should be nothing with your messages. Something goes very wrong.

When backup will be ready then you can try to "restore" folder(s)/file(-s) using Win7 functions. I'm not guarantee it will be available for you.

Next steps/hints will be not easy because I'm using Windows 7 Polish language version so I must to translate. Maybe other people will help here:
1) DON'T use your "favorite file manage" until you're absolutely sure it will work with system restore function,
2) open your SeaMonkey profile's folder here:

Code: Select all

c:\Users\[User_Name]\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\SeaMonkey\Profiles\
and open folder with some random name (e.g. abcdefgh.default)
3) open "Mail" folder",
4) find (but not open) folder of e-mail account (where was deleted MSF file),
5) click RMB (Right Mouse Button) on such folder and choose "Properties" (should be at the bottom of context menu),
6) in window "Properties: [Folder_Name]" find tab "Previous version" (or something like this)
7) check if there is something with date; if yes then what dates are available
8) you can try to open and search for deleted "trash.msf" file.

If you don't have such file there (too "new" restore point) then you can try to fix mail folder under SeaMonkey. Actually you can start with it (if you have backup already):
Start SeaMonkey -> in "Mail & Newsgroups" window choose a folder where you can't see any messages but they should be there -> click RMB and choose "Properties" -> click "Repair Folder" -> wait for result -> if works then repeat with other folders.

Don't try to do everything in one time. Small steps.

Don't panic, grab a towel...
