Yes, just compile with optimization for PPC7400 instead of mine thats for PPC7450.
Do you think you can manage to do that?

I have no idea how to compile. I don't have a compiler or something like that?

Would it be possible to compile a version for PPC 7400?

I haven't compiled before but if someone got this working, I think my work computer is one of these. I have a G4 450. :)

Yes, I think we have the same processor family. Perhaps if someone with this kind of processor knows how to compile a version we could use it both.

@TwisterMc & darksphere.
If you want I could build a ppc7400 optimized firefox for you today, so you guys could test if its any faster!
But it will only be this one build, so if its a success you need to learn how to do it yourself...

Edit: Building now. :D

Ok... I'll give it a go. If better I'll try to learn to build. There are instructions on Mozilla. :D PS is this as good as the most current version of Firefox?

^ Great. :)
You find instructions on Mozilla, or use the guide I have created for my own use. Guide here.

Try the same .mozconfig as I use, but with 7400 instead of 7450.

@ TwisterMc & darksphere.
My firefox build optimized for PPC7400 is ready for trial. Give it a good test and see if its any faster than the official builds! :)

Download here.

Installed and running thanks. Now what I don't understand is how is it faster? Or why? :D What on the inside does it? I'll be back lator with performance feedback.

Optimized code runs faster than generic code because its targeted to a specific processor.
Its using the instruction sets better than the generic one! :)

Hello,

thanks for your help. I installed the 7400 version, but did not notice any speed increasement. So I think the people with the old G4 can use the normal version and don't have to compile any special versions...

Confirmation of speed increase on 7400@350

Post by Qualion »

Hi,

Unlike darksphere, I can carn really notice a difference between the stock Firefox and the tuned one. Launches faster, loads pages in a flash, and I haven't had a crash yet (using it for 10 minutes... =] )

This is on a PCI G4 (7400, I suppose, it was the first ever G4 Mac) running at 350 MHz.

Thank you, thank you, thank you again!

Hello,

my G4 is a Sawtooth, the first AGP-generation. Perhaps there is a difference between our systems...

Is it built on the final 1.0 release ?

Why you didn't used the standard icon ????

You should add in it the FirefoxSet to give it a More Mac OS X look to the Firefox's widgets.
