True. This one will be a big loss, though.

Re: The End
Also agree that the OSL managed hosting could be a really good option as mentioned.
IMHO Reddit is not the best way to go for a forum. Perhaps we can find another hosting site.
And have someone take over as admin(transfer of ownership) and also have a co-admin and we also have many moderators here too.
Would like to see mozillaZine kept active. It's do-able.
May I suggest that the members here donate $ towards helping to keep the site active.
We need to keep mozillaZine alive! It's a wealth of information with many helpful members and there are a lot of members here too.

Re: The End
Sorry, by owning I mean someone who knows PHP, MySQL, etc who can patch both the machines and the software itself as new versions come out. Just leaving something running on the internet is a bad idea, and not something that OSU supports, which is why we're here now (I agree with them). The reason keeping MZ alive is because of how much legacy there is. If someone is interested in figuring out a new forum that they'd like me to point at, happy to do so. I can not however transfer the current data to a new owner, because of the complexities of that (user data sharing, etc).

Will the forum threads and articles be archived where they are still accessible and searchable online?
What is the problem with transferring ownership. Is ownership of the data in an entity or an individual? You are concerned about legal liability of transferring anonymous user data? or transferring parts of background user data like real names and email addresses?

Re: The End
So what would it take to keep this forum alive? Obviously money and administrative personnel. I'm sure there are enough folks that would contribute the money as I would do. There are loads of capable people to take over the administrative functions. How about a GoFundMe campaign?

Re: The End
Jason, from reading your previous replies, I think the 2 questions I have are these -kerz wrote:... plan is to move the entire content base to static hosting.
#1. Do you personally want mozillaZine to exist and carry on into the future?
#2. If so, are you prepared to work with the community here and with OSL to make that happen?
I ask that, firstly, because the Open Source Labs at Oregon State University may well be quite keen to see probably the oldest Open Source products discussion forum on the entire Internet carry on as before. i.e. it proves that Open Source is here to stay and not some relic of the past to be only shown as a museum piece.
Secondly, I ask because if you do not actually want the site to carry on at all, then all the good suggestions we make here are not going to succeed, are they?

Re: The End
I have run and maintained phpBB powered forums before, but what else is involved? How is the hosting / domain name paid for?

Re: The End
So glad to see folks in this thread looking for constructive ways to save these all-important SeaMonkey forum capabilities.
Jason, as other have said, hope you will work with key players to salvage things and smooth your transition away.

Re: The End
Thanks, kerz, for keeping the site and forums running for as long as you have. I've been an occasional visitor to mozillaZine for about as long as the site has been around (which probably predates your involvement) and though I haven't been as active on the forums as some other commenters in this thread, the community here has rarely failed to solve any problem I've posted about. The loss of the forums will leave a huge void in the support communities, especially for SeaMonkey. I hope that some sort of solution can be found to keep things running, but if not, then please accept my gratitude for your dedication and hard work.
