HowTo sync an events calendar color:Google Calendar & TBird?

Post by JohnDohe »

Hi,

Is there a way to sync the color of a scheduled event, created first in Google Calendar,
with the color that displays on the imported event in TBird?

I've installed the required add-ons to sync GCal with TBird, but I don't see a setting
to do what I'm referring to.

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

It seems to be one of the limitations of the interface. As far as I am concerned, this limitation is almost a feature because if an event were to be seen in another colour, I would think of it as belonging to another calendar!

You are certainly permitted to think what you will, however,
your comment on color perception constitutes a majority
vote of "1" thought.

Does "1" thought qualify as a statement for ALL who would
use the service?

Would it not be better to survey a sufficient population of those
who use TBird to obtain an adequate cross-section of opinion?

Thank you for your singular opinion.

However, you did little to answer my question save for offering
your "thought" as, "... one of the limitations of the interface."

My question was not to do a survey of opinion.

Are you SURE it is an interface limitation?

Or do you just THINK it?

In any event, and to others, if one does not KNOW an answer,
and facts are requested, would it be better to keep one's opinions
to oneself rather than muddy the field with what one "thinks"?

I asked for facts, not 'thinks'.

Thank you ... for whatever your input is worth.

Moreover, thank you for such an absorbing discussion.

JohnDohe, just so you are clear on the nature of things here -- This forum is not run by or formally associated with Mozilla. We're an independent user-helping-user community and everyone here is a volunteer. That means that, other than in cases of individual user experience being reported (some of it garnered over many years and much use), much of what you will see in answers on the forums is an assumption, opinion, or educated guess. We seldom see any Thunderbird/Lightning developers posting here so it's not like someone is reviewing code to give you an absolute response.

@ DanRaisch

I respect your response..

Can you direct me to any forum(s) able to provide absolute response(s) ?

Thank you.

Nope, all of the support sites for Mozilla products are staffed by volunteers.

mgagnonlv is right, is not possible to sync the color of a scheduled event in Google Calendar with the color that displays on the imported event.
I don't know if Provider For Google Calendar would allow to know the color of a single event with the Google api, but Lightning doesn't allow to change the color of a single event because it uses the rule to assign the color to the calendar (assignment done on Lightning interface with any kind of sync).
The only color you can change is the category that is displayed as a vertical bar on the right side of the event but, again, there is a different color for each category, and is not possible to change the color for a single event without change the category, moreover, no color sync is possible.

There's a feature request to implement iCalendar's "COLOR" property
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1362121
but, from a quick test I did, it won't satisfy your request because Google doesn't implements the color by using that property even when the color is changed, with Google interface, for a single event.

Sorry if my "it seems" was interpreted a bit too literally. There is no built-in option and there is also no known trick to display event colours from Google Calendar onto Thunderbird with Lightning.

I then added a couple of sentences which some might see as humour (good, bad or very bad), but that also reflected my personal experience once I looked at a multi-user calendar on Google itself. I had defined the default colour of that calendar as blue-grey, but some users decided to add events in green, red (the colour of my personal calendar) or black (the colour of my office calendar). One could say that not having event colours is the preference of one (and probably a few others), but the first sentence of my original post was definitely a fact.
