How do you enable this? Haven't found anything related to inviting others in my calendar?

In Thunderbird, choose the event, go to File, Mail Selected Events Up pops a new composition window.

Aha....I see.

Do you know if this is supposed to be implemented into the new event window (as it is in outlook/notes)?

Bugzilla!

To discover things like that, search Bugzilla.

Andrei Cular asked for that enhancement in June:
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=248156

If you have more information about why it is needed, you could add a comment.
And if it is important to you, you could vote for it.

For some reason it is not mentioned on the news page for calendar but there is a new build of it available that works with Thunderbird one. Just go to the appropriate download section and you will find it. I've just tried it and all works well :)
