calendar problem

I am using 1.8a5 on Windows XP and I can't get calendar to work. I didn't see 1.8a5 listed, so I tried the Nightly Build distribution for Windows dated 2004-11-17. That hosed my system, so I did a reinstall and tried the distribution for 1.7.3 and 1.8a4 dated 2004-11-12 and again got hosed. Is this any way to try this without reverting to 1.7.3, or do I just have to wait for a new release?
