It would be a great idea if Thunderbird overrided windows calendar in the taskbar to show Thunderbird's calendar instead. It could show the days of the month and you could click on one to open day view or click on the name of the month to open month view.
You could even links to the 3-5 most recent unread messages underneath.

Moving to Calendar forum as Thunderbird, in and of itself, does not have any calendar functionality.

But everyone uses Lightning. In fact I'd completely forgotten it was an addon.

No, everyone does not use Lightning. I use Google Calendar and many others do as well.
