Thunderbird seems to be sending inappropriate meeting notices on my behalf. It is difficult to understand the scope of the problem because:
1) I am not notified when Thunderbird sends a meeting invitation, update, or cancellation.
2) Meeting invitations, updates, and cancellations don't appear among my sent emails.
I only know there is a problem because on rare occasions, people tell me they are receiving confusing meeting notices from me.
Here is an example: Earlier today, I was invited to a meeting with several people. I accepted the meeting invitation and it was added to my calendar. Then I noticed that I had a conflict at that time, so I deleted the meeting from my calendar. Later, one of the other attendees sent me an email asking why the meeting was cancelled. She forwarded an email she received from me saying that I had cancelled the meeting. Presumably, everyone received the same cancellation notice from me, so now I have created confusion about whether or not the meeting is still happening. Also, the email I sent cancelling the meeting – the one which was forwarded back to me – appears nowhere in my Sent folder.
I would appreciate general advice regarding this problem, but I also have these two specific questions:
I seem to remember that Thunderbird used to prompt me before sending meeting notices on my behalf. It definitely doesn't do that any more. Is there a setting which controls that?
Why can't I see meeting notice emails that are being sent automatically on my behalf? Are they intentionally hidden, or is this a bug?

What version of Thunderbird are you using? Please don't say latest as that is ambiguous.
Try setting calendar.debug.log and calendar.debug.log.verbose to true using the config editor (right click New / Boolean to add it if it doesn't exist), right click on the calendar in the Calendars pane to reload it, duplicate one of the problems, and look in the error console in tools -> developer tools afterwards.
Are you using a CalDAV server? I found a 7 year old thread - https://users.sogo.narkive.com/8DG1MvaL ... tification - that talks about "if a caldav server indicates it support for the 'calendar-auto-schedule' feature, then that means the server, rather than Lightning, will be responsible for sending email notifications." Does your problem occur with other CalDAV servers? You might try adding a google or fruux based calendar (just for troubleshooting purposes) and see if it has the same problems using some email accounts you own.

I find it feasible that the errant meeting notices are being sent by my CalDAV server, and not by Lightning. I researched the settings for my CalDAV server, but I could find nothing related to a 'calendar-auto-schedule' feature. I opened a ticket with the hosting company to see if there are hidden settings they can change for me.
I have not been able to experiment with other CalDAV servers as Tanstaafl suggested, but I have observed that I have no problems with meetings scheduled in the local calendar.
If anyone knows more about how Lightning interfaces with CalDAV servers, I would appreciate more information. For instance, is there a setting somewhere that tells Lightning whether or not to use the 'calendar-auto-schedule' feature when the server advertises that feature is available.

I continue to work on this. I have noticed that the calendar which is malfunctioning has the setting "Prefer client-side email scheduling" option unchecked and greyed out. When I hover over that option, I see this help text: "This option is only available if the calendar server handles scheduling. Enabling will allow to fall back to the standard email based scheduling instead of leaving it to the server." Despite this tip, I don't know what an unchecked greyed-out checkbox means in this case. Does anyone have any insight?
I also found this bug report: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1515872 . That report suggests looking at the Error Console for insight into what the CalDAV server is doing. However, I am unable to follow the instructions there. Can someone please help me with that? Options > General and scroll all the way down to the Config Editor button.

Perhaps, but then what is handling the scheduling? Lightning isn't showing any scheduling emails in my Sent folder.That probably means the calendar server doesn't handle scheduling.
I was able to recreate the problem. Specifically, I created a meeting in my CalDAV calendar and invited a Gmail address I control. Then I deleted the meeting. I received no prompt about whether or not I wanted to send a meeting cancellation. No meeting cancellation email appeared in my Sent folder. Nevertheless, I received a cancellation email at the Gmail address ostensibly from my main address. Below, I have pasted what appeared in the error console. I don't see anything relevant.
