FF Android issues with Flash Player on BBC sites

Post by undine »

Using FF 46.0.1 on Android 4.4.2 on Samsung Galaxy NoteII

Cannot listen to BBC radio streaming live or stored

1) stored programmes

What should happen when you click to play http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b078w8zx is that the BBC iPlayerRadio should launch.

What does happen when you tap to activate the plugin is the plugin area goes light grey and nothing happens.

With the built-in Samsung browser behaviour is as expected ... clicking play launches the iPlayerRadio.

2) listening live on http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/player/bbc_radio_fourfm

The radio player page loads but all you ever get is the "sound of silence" error message.

With the built-in Samsung browser behaviour is as expected ... clicking play launches the iPlayerRadio.

This has been an issue with at least the last two versions of FF for Android ... I used to run a very old version and it worked just fine ... sadly I updated!

Can this issue be resolved?

Unfortunately Firefox for Android will always have issues with Flash Player as it is not supported on android devices anymore.
You can install an old version of the Adobe Flash Player (this is the latest/last version for Android devices) from here:
http://download.macromedia.com/pub/flas ... re_ics.apk

Install note: It will be buggy and cause Firefox to freeze/crash, I've played around with it extensively. It's best not to use it.

But it appears that the page/player you're talking about on the BBC site/link you posted isn't Flash, it's Javascript based.

I hope this clarification helps you narrow down your issue, I'm not really sure what else to suggest.

Daniel.

Trying the first link, on a phone with Android 4.1.2 I don't get the grey screen after enabling the plugin, however audio playback is very stuttery and stops entirely after a few seconds. As for the live stream, I'm seeing the "sound of silence", too.

You could try opting in to the BBC's HTML5 iPlayer, which is currently in Beta and seems to be working fine for me. Unfortunately it's only working for on-demand content at the moment, so it won't help you for the Radio 4 live stream.
