I think that to get those missing APIs we should be laud. We need to put comments of in more visible Mozilla websites and also under articles they are publishing. We can use these links to show them what APIs we need:

Elhem Enohpi wrote:An update for those wondering if/when a Web Extensions version of Session Manager could be possible:

There are some things that Session Manager does that are still not possible to do with Web Extensions until Mozilla provides the interface (API) to do so. These impact all tab/session restoring extensions, not just Session Manager. Also I can't speak for Morac, even if the APIs are implemented, he may or may not port Session Manager to Web Extensions. I suppose it would be a lot of work.

1. Access, modify, and restore back-forward tab history. This is necessary to be able to restore tabs' histories when restoring a session, in the same way the built-in "show my tabs from last time" does. Otherwise all tab history is lost when restoring a session. That makes it more similar to just opening a set of bookmarks than truly restoring tabs. This is probably the main issue that's blocking Session Manager from working in Firefox 57 the way it does in earlier versions.
- Status: The function/API has been requested, but has not been approved by Mozilla, and nobody is working on it. It was approved for Google Chrome many years ago, and someone was working on it, but it looks like they abandoned it a couple of years ago, and there's no further progress. It seems unlikely to be finished anytime soon.

- http://groups.google.com/a/chromium.org ... be7420f4db#
- https://groups.google.com/forum/?fromgr ... 6zY2ZjGSYg

2. Restore sessions without loading all the tabs. Only load the selected tab, and create the others in an unloaded (a.k.a. "discarded") state, until they are clicked on. Important when loading a session with hundreds of tabs!
- Status: The function has been approved by Mozilla for Web Extensions, but at the moment nobody is working on implementing it. However it seems possible to be finished soon, as related work is being done.
It seems that it would depend on allowing Web Extensions to unload/discard tabs, which is currently being worked on (at least for desktop browsers) and nearly complete, here:

There may be other issues I don't know about, but these seem to be the main ones that remain. If you want to express your support for Mozilla to implement the necessary functions in Firefox, you can get a Bugzilla account and vote for the above bugs, particularly 1378651. Please follow Bugzilla etiquette, and just vote for the bug without commenting. Comments like "you need to fix this!" aren't helpful.

Are you familiar with this Google document?
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/ ... edit#gid=0
(found here: https://www.howtogeek.com/333230/why-fi ... extension/ )
According to this document Session Manager will not be ported to Webextension.

Another page:
https://arewewebextensionsyet.com/
does not contain any information about on Session Manager.

My impression is that for some reason not enough pressure is placed on Mozilla to make required APIs for Session Manager.
Tab Mix Plus requiring the same APIs is well represented on both pages.

All I want a session manger to do, is to save my sessions and to load the last one when I start Firefox.
Does 'Tab Session manager' do all this, because I've tried it with FF57 and can't get it to load a session?
It does save them, and I did try loading a session but it opened all the tabs at once (I have quite a few tabs) and brought my laptop to a standstill.
What settings are you using for Firefox and what settings are you using with 'TSM', and is it saving sessions, and when you start Firefox, loading your last session as 'Session Manager' used to?
(Yes, I know there is a lot of the word 'session' being used but it's late and I'm too tired to think of a different way of putting it :) )

Duncan , does the TabSuspender work immediately ? Last time I tried one of the crummy new session addons with v57 it slowly started from beginning , left one after the other and quits like @ 40-something . I've got a 60 , 600 and 1200 tab session so any input is greatly appreciated ! I only run a single core so yehp !

and to load the last one when I start Firefox.
firefox (and also v57) is capable to this without extension.
Does 'Tab Session manager' do all this, because I've tried it with FF57 and can't get it to load a session?
as noted before you dont need a session manager for this.
but you can reload the last session when firefox was closed (if you set up TSM this way)

as GHM113 any time mentioned any session webextension is NOT able to save history for tabs, this is gone for an unknown period (needs API).

Tab Session Manager is from my view a decent alternative (MySessions is buggy, no further investigated).
MySessions 2.3 did not fix the lost settings:
IMPORTANT: the problem with resetting the settings by default is found and will be fixed in the near future.
tabZen is not my favorite, Tab Saver also not, i like OneTab for saving my investigations most, but i dont use it as a session manager.
60 , 600 and 1200 tab session
you probably never will open >99% of those again.
Tab Suspender extension automatically unload (kill/hibernate) inactive tabs. This action can free up your browser memory usage.
firefox (also chromium/chrome) is performing this itself. tabs are suspended and need to reload after certain time.
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefo ... -unloader/
i am experiencing this feature when using my other profile with some more open tabs. from my understanding no need to install it.

Hello, ive been using Session Manager for a quite long time, and with the Quantum update, which i initially didn't like at all, but now i quite enjoy. I like the fast and "slickness" of the Quantum update. I'm missing the addon, but i can kinda live with it. But it when i was using the Session Manager addon, i could, when clicking with the mouse wheel on the free space right from my open tabs, re open the last closed tab. Which i find very handy, since for me its much quicker to get my finger of the left mouse button and on the mouse wheel, than my left hand on the keyboard. I don't have a clue a how to solve this problem, now that Session Manager can't do that anymore. I dont think a key remapper would work since i still want my "normal" mouse wheel functions, like clicking on a link to open it in a new tab. Does anyone have a suggestion?

Apologize my bad English, greetings from Germany

Question and answer:
https://hacks.mozilla.org/2017/11/new-i ... ment-22461
https://medium.com/@robertab_51898/fire ... 86da251ce4 (answer at the bottom of the page)

WE NEED TO LET MOZILLA MANAGERS KNOW THAT WE NEED APIs FOR SESSION MANAGER: PLEASE DO THE SAME. Even if Session Manager will not be ported, there will APIs which could be used by other session managers, like Tab Session Manager, My Sessions, or Tab Mix Plus.

-----------------------
QUESTION:

Firefox 57 and Quantum are definitely big achievements. But at the same time you destroyed a lot of great addons, like SESSION MANAGER / TAB MIX PLUS. I am staying with Firefox 56 (or Waterfox) until you will solve the problem (see below). Firefox is going to loose a lot of advanced users.

Can you prepare APIs needed by developers of Session Manager / Tab Mix Plus and other similar extensions to make WebExtensions? Some of those developers stated clearly that they will prepare WebExtension only after all APIs will be prepared by Mozilla. The list of needed APIs:
http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic ... #p14762057
http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic ... #p14772668
http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic ... #p14777435

Also those session manager extensions could cooperate nicely with FF multi-account containers.
-----------------------

ANSWER:

Hi Robert,

Thank you for the bug references. We’re currently planning what APIs to prioritize next year, and I’ll pass along those lists. I know things like tab discarding are important for bringing other add-ons, like Tab Groups, to Firefox Quantum, so it should be easy to make a case for them. Of course, I can’t promise anything specific. I’ll also caution that some of the cosmetic features of Tab Mix Plus, like multi-line tab bars, are probably not going to make it in the near future, as we’re still trying to figure out how to best handle UI modification in Quantum.

If you must use an older version of Firefox, please use Firefox Extended Support Release (“ESR”), which is still receiving critical security patches. Other older versions do not. ESR is currently based on Firefox 52, which supports legacy add-ons, though it will upgrade to Firefox 59 in May next year.

Thanks again,
Dan Callahan

Import Session / Seesion Manager

Post by xir »

Dear All,

I have a little problem with my firefox update toward Firefox 57.0. I (For Unbutu)
I used an extension called "Session Manager" that is now obsolete with Firefox 57.0.
Then I have downloaded a smilar extension called: "Tab Session Manager" but I don't know where I can find the old sessions recorded by "Session Manager".
Where did they have been saved by "Session Manager" ? Is there any specific extension?

Best regards and thank you for your attention

Maybe someone with sufficient rights should add some useful information in the first/last post about Session Manager and FF57 and lock the thread for a while. Every day some new member asks the same few questions.

Locking this temporarily as the issue of Session Manager and Version 57 of Firefox has been discussed ad nauseam in this thread. Please read from page 227 to find the current status of the extension and likelihood of an update to work with Quantum.
