Thanks for your answers, Diego. I haven't installed the new version (just found out about it when I came here). But I wonder if the times when Clean links doesn't start for me are the times when Firefox has crashed? I am using Firefox 26 portable and Session Manager extension. Fx 26 crashes sometimes when displaying gifs (I have heard this from others too), which I do a lot of on reddit, and also (for me only, apparently) Flash crashes quite often and I restart (which is not a Fx crash). So I would guess around 1/3 of my Fx startups are due to real crashes, about the same ratio as CL failure to start. Anyway, I just started Firefox after a real (gif-caused) crash and CleanLinks didn't start. There was only 1 (unrelated?) JS error in the browser console: "16:39:01.443 "log" "blocking 0 sites" ui.js:88" (I couldn't see how to copy the link to the js source, but "lightbeam" was in the path, that's another extension I have)

I will install the new version, and also watch to see if the problem correlates with Firefox crashes. But perhaps you know if that situation (Firefox 26 crashes -> restore session with Session Manager) causes CleanLinks to fail to start?

Edit: I installed 2.4.6a1 and google search results are still opening in the same tab (only when Cleaned). Maybe it's a Google thing - I can't remember where else links get cleaned and normally open in a new tab - if you have any sites I could use for testing? but Google is pretty important? I did check the box for "follow target attribute" - do I need to do anything else?

Hi freecyber,

Regarding your problem with Google search results opening up in the same tab, I think this is normal Firefox behaviour. I use an extension called "Tab Mix Plus", it allows you to customise exactly how you want your tabs to behave. I have it set up to open every new link in a new tab.

I tried Google with "Tab Mix Plus" deactivated, and it behaved exactly the same way your seeing. With "Tab Mix Plus" activated all Google results opened in new tabs.

Please install it and give it ago, see if it sorts out your problem.

You mention "Session Manager", I had this installed quite a while ago and it cause me no end of Firefox crashes (perhaps the same reason you keep crashing), the good news is that TMP has its own session manager built in, and ever since I removed the "Session Manager" extension and started using TMP with its session manager I have not crashed once.

TMP has a lot of settings, so if you run into any problems and want any help setting it up to use its session manager, or to open a new tab with any link, please PM me and I PM you back with instructions.

Regards,
MC Fat Tongue.

Diego,

I have just noticed the new option "Follow target attribute" on version 2.4.6a1, would you please explain what this does, and what would be the consequences of turning it "on" or "off".

MC Fat Tongue - thanks for the response. Opening result links in same tab is default Google behavior, but this can be changed in Google Search Settings (to open in new tab). This is how I have it set, and how it normally works for me in Firefox - result links open in new tab.

I used Tab Mix Plus for a long time, I can't remember why I switched, but it was due to some problem or incompatibility (which may not exist any more). I will try disabling Session Manager. It's not one of my most essential extensions.

freecyber,

I would completely uninstall "Session Manager" rather than just disabling it. Let me know if it sorts out your crashing problem, I know it did with me.

I'm glad I was able help a little. If there is anything you need please don't hesitate to ask.

Hi there, sorry i forgot to point out the target fix is optional, there's an switch to activate it (thus, it's disabled by default), I've briefly tested it over my router's settings web ui and it worked, but didn't tested it over normal sites assuming it'd ok as well. Re Google results, just checked that and found there aren't target attributes used on links..so, opening in a different tab/window is obviously handled from JS. I don't see that as a big deal in any case, we can continue using MMB when we want to open links in a new tab, or any of the hotkey combinations for that matter. Cheers!

Hello Diego,

Is there any chance you could include http://www.mywot.com in the default skip domains option in Clean Links. Without it I am unable to change my WOT(Web of Trust) settings.

It's not a problem if you don't want it to be a default option as I have already entered it manually, I just thought other users might run into the same problem and not realise what the cause is.

Seeing the number of users the WOT addon has, i think it could be a good candidate to whitelist by default.

what their nested URLs look like?

I'm not sure what you mean by "what their nested URLs look like?", but here is the full URL that comes up when you go to settings. https://www.mywot.com/en/settings/en-US ... urce=addon

The add-on works perfectly well in every other respect, just not in "settings", until I put https://www.mywot.com in the skip domains option.

I hope this helps.

Hi Mc,

I've installed WOT to give that a try myself, fwiw it's the Redirect Watcher what is causing the URL to be cleared, but in any case i didn't noticed any issue on the settings page. I.e changing Radios or de/selecting Checkboxes i get a "Saved" notification and with the help of PrefMon i was able to verify the changed settings are indeed saved.

Anyway, i've whitelisted mywot.com since i might be missing something...

Cheers.

Hi Diego,

I've just installed version 2.5.a2 of clean links via your Git-hub extension installer, and my problems with WOT settings are now gone, thanks very much.

I've noticed that the version number has changed from 2.4.6.1 to 2.5a2 so are there any other changes to the program other than the mywot.com white-listing.

MC Fat Tongue.

Changes from 2.4.6.1 and 2.5a2

Basically, CL is now localized - thanks to Simon Chan who wanted the extension in Chinese.

The locale files are here in case someone wants to translate it to his language.

Cheers.

Hi, just a small issue; Links as https://maps.google.com/?q=https://deve ... amples.kml can't be opened correctly with cleanlinks enabled.

Thanks for a useful privacy tool!

Hi Eiland,

It's just a matter of whitelisting the maps.google.com domain. In the upcoming version 2.5 you can do so easily by right-clicking the toolbar button, if you want feel free to give that version a try before it gets released by installing it straight from Github.

Cheers.

CleanLinks adds a hashmark (#) at the end of every cleaned URL. Is this normal? As I just installed it, it would be the latest version. This is breaking some URLs as they don't support having the hashmark at the end.
