Not sure why you used "1ex" in your example, should a few px not be enough too?
Because the gap should be proportional to the font size, not an absolute setting.
Perhaps 0.5ex would do, though.

In case someone is curious about this add-ons future or what happens when the upcoming Thunderbird 68 releases: CMB won't be updated anymore (read OP for more info), but most code got moved to CustomCSSforTb project.

I wonder how Aris feels about someone asking his permission to adopt his extremely popular CMB add-on and updating it to make it compatible for TB68+. :-k

Also, I wonder how much it would take for Aris to reconsider updating CMB for TB68+. :-k
