[Ext] SearchWith 0.2 released

Post by soyapi »

SearchWith is an extension for Firefox, Thunderbird and Flock.
It allows you search selected text with various search services using the context (right-click) menu option.

Download it from https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/2194/

New features in this version are:

* import search plugins from Firefox 2.0 and later versions which the use the open standard A9 Open Search format.

* easily change the search engine associated with a search service and instantly use it without going to Manage Services dialog. Just hold down the SHIFT key while selecting the search service or right-click without selecting any text.

* get the url when you right-click on a link without selecting any text.

* added Turkish locale

Other features include:

* Menu Item (Service list) ordering
Now you can manually sort the search services that appear in the context menu using the interface under Manage Services...

* Manage folders to import Search Plugins from
Add/Remove search plugin folders to import search engines from. This means you can import Firefox search plugins into Thunderbird.

* Always enabled
no need to highlight some text to have SearchWith on the context menu. To temporarily disable SearchWith option on the context menu, uncheck "Enable Context menu" in Manage Services->General

* Desktop Search integration
If Google Desktop has been installed in its default path, it will be automatically integrated in SearchWith

* 8 new locales:
Available in Danish, German, Greek, Spanish, French, Croatian, Japanese and Portuguese in addition to Italian and English languages

Looks GREAT and I've installed it - having trouble adding the search engines in my profile folder. Nothing happens when I hit "add engines;" hopefully I don't have to configure each address separately. Also call is the search.qlite file, which I can have Bookmark Backup remember, instead of inflating prefs.

I want to to also add multiple engines to "services," like Google/Flickr/Yahoo/AllTheWEb to "services/photos." Can that be done?

This is very interesting and a great effort - I would just like my default profile/searchplugins engines listed on the context listing as easily as possible. Thank you!

Hey paulfox. Nice to hear from you.

Firefox 2 uses a new format for search plugins which are not yet supported in the released versions. I've already added support for those search plugins in the development version which will be released in a few weeks time.

You can contact me if you want me to send you the development version before it is released

"Add Engines" is used for manually adding a search engine to SearchWith. You first enter the name of the engine then "Add Engine" button will be activated allowing you to enter the base url and path to its icon if available.

If you have a folder containing Firefox search plugins that have not been imported already, you can add the folder under the General tab and then click "Import Search Plugins" button under Engines.

Can you give me more information on search.qlite? I'll look at Bookmark Backup to see how SearchWith can be used with it if possible. I will also consider supporting flat files for storing user services and engines.

Multiple engines at the moment are not supported. When sub menus are implemented, you will be able to use that otherwise for now, add separate search services for each engine.

Otherwise, you can also use other extensions which only specialise in bringing all your search plugins to the context menu. SearchWith is not trying to compete with those but to allow users to search different types of content (bookmarks, encyclopedia, dictionary, photos, blogs, desktop, etc) without clattering the context menu.

I hope that helps.

Yep - that's what wasn't working. Great news on the dev-build and thanks for your response here - I'll wait to look at when released. Cheers/ p
