i agree that dsl or broadband is for now the best way to speed up your isp connection but there should be something for dial up users who cannot afford to upgrade to have something to speedup there dialup connection that actually works.
i cannot help but think that processors also play a part in how your os,browsing, etc.works 32bit vs. 64bit pc , duelcore processors vs. hyperthreading technology.
i believe that a fast connection and a powerfull enough processor can make a big difference in a way pc performs in a desktop or notebook

The only thing you can do to speed up the web browsing experience for a dialup user is to use something like Google's Web Accelerator (and other services like it)
http://webaccelerator.google.com/
Basically what it does is compress the graphics on web pages before they get transferred to you. They won't be as clear as the originals but once they are smaller byte sizes they transfer across your tiny pipe much faster which results in a quicker rendering of the page. Be sure to read the privacy policy with that though, as it basically tracks all your browsing. It temporarily caches cookies, too.
Another thing you can do is set up a proxy, like squid, that would cache things for you on a big hard drive and sites that you visit frequently will be loaded off there if they haven't changed.

Re: FASTERFOX VS FIRETUNE
I do wonder, if anyone actually tried to measure the improvements of such plugins by using for example http://webwait.com page and few sites (complicated enought) to compare the results before and after.
For old FF v3.0.14 is actually keeping the number of connections quite low what gives best speed results.

Code: Select all
network.http.max-connections;30
network.http.max-connections-per-server;10
network.http.max-persistent-connections-per-proxy;8

Holy Old Thread Batman! Locked.
Also Firefox 3.0.14 is ancient (from August 2009) and rather vulnerable now in being very behind on security updates as the oldest 3.x you should even consider using is Firefox 3.6.28
