It's no an Extension, it's a wholesale replacement of the current chrome and UI code, far outside the scope of an extension. AAR you need to follow his instructions with the browser closed down. If enough people push for its inclusion, it may show up in the trunk.

If you really want to see where it's downloading from, can't you open the progress dialog? The download manager is supposed to manage downloads, giving you a quick overview.
The selection of icons is smart because they're already included in the default theme, and probably most other themes as well. Not much you can do to change that.
I do agree, however, that it should clip the filename after a certain length, adding a "..." at the end. Say, 100 pixels minimum for the meter?

I really think the progress bar should have it's own line. It would make things look less cramped, and hopefully improve appearance.
Idea: what if the progress bar was underneath the file name (where it was before) and a % complete symbol was placed where the progress bar was (right justified, same line as filename)

Hey folks. I repackaged the download manager as an extension so it should be easier to install/uninstall. No more swapping of .jar files.
You can download extension's installer here: <a href="http://fire.prohosting.com/andman42/downloadmgr.html">http://fire.prohosting.com/andman42/downloadmgr.html</a>.
I've only tested this with Windows, but hopefully it will work with Linux. If someone can test it and let me know, that'd be great.

I should have mentioned something. Sorry.
If you are going to use the extension, I you need to use the original 0.8 jar files (classic.jar, en-US.jar, and toolkit.jar). If you didn't make backup copies, you can just reinstall Firefox 0.8 over your existing installation to overwrite the modified jars with the original jar files. Then the extension should work.
EdgeOfEpsilon, try that and let me know what happens.

Some more ideas for your download extension may be found in this thread, if you havn't seen it yet.

Personally, I would like a DM sidebar extension, with very small "modern themed" 16x16 icons and fonts.

Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.7a) Gecko/20040211 Firebird/0.8.0+ (daihard: XFT+GTK2; optimized for P4/SSE-2)
It works!
EDIT: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.7a) Gecko/20040216 Firefox/0.8.0+ (daihard: XFT+GTK2; optimized for P4/SSE-2)
It still works!
Needs more upload to Texturizer, Extension Room and Extensions Mirror!

OMG this rocks!

All it needs is proper theme hookage and you can probably file an RFE in Bugzilla right now!
