Post by spfuller »

hi,

yesterday my laptop froze and i had to turn it off by holding down the power button. today when i opened up thunderbird none of my folders were present. i followed some instructions to re-create the account then to point the local directory to the old folder so that i had all of the emails that i downloaded. this all works perfectly. however i could not get any messages from hotmail. i have uninstalled the webmail and hotmail extensions and reinstalled them and it still would not download any messages. i then completly uninstalled thunderbird and extensions and tried again. i was once again unable to download any messages from hotmail. when clicking on get mail for hotmail it says "connected to localhost..." in the status bar, but it didnt ask for a password. ive checked the plugin and the the pop and smtp servers are working. any help with this problem woul be grately appreciated?

cheers,
Simon

This fixes the large mail box bug.

hi,

i followed all these instructions to get hotmail working again after the recent changes and updated to the hotmail extension 1.2.18b1 (which, for me, was better than 1.2.17 as instead of downloading my old messages in the inbox in batches of 10, downloaded all my old inbox messages in one go and i could just delete them in thunderbird as i had them sorted in tb olders already anyway). but ever since using the new version i have the problem of not being able to get big messages (several megabytes) of which i happened to get two and by now, thunderbird/hotmail extension attempt to download it every so often, but fails. (in the beginning i got a "connection time out to localhost" error message) by now, all i get is a message in tb with a blank subject header and a dash in the sender field and the time as the time of the attempt and a lot of html code as the message body. also after downloading this dash-message, it moves the message in question from my online inbox to the online delete folder which i saw when i checked using my browser. now recovering my message whenever i get a failed attempt dash-message is a little unnerving. i'd like to just download it and then it can delete it online if it so wishes ;oP

is it possible that the new hotmail extension version can't download large emails anymore ? has anyone else got this issue ?
any help would be appreciated.

thanks,

paddie

gDay

I'd like some opinions on whether to move from Windows Live Mail Client accessing ISP POP accounts and Windows Live Hotmail accounts. The WLM Client works reliably day in day out, IMO its a reasonably good mail client and a not too shabby news reader. Heres the background to why I'm even thinking of moving back to T'bird.

I read about ThunderBrowse earlier this week - it's something I would really like to have.

I used T'bird up until a couple years ago because I needed a portable mail client on a USB stick. I used Mr Postman to get at the WebDAV flavour of HoTMaiL. When I stopped moving and got a computer and high speed link, I decided to use Windows Live Mail - I didn't know at the time about the change from WebDAV to Delta Synch (I'd never even heard of them) - my reason for preferring the WLM client is that it does not pretend it's Outlook Express.

WLM works well with the current Hotmail, one would hope it would, seeing that they're both from the same factory. I have had no problems with this aspect of WLM since about 3 months before the end of beta testing, very stable , very reliable.

I get the impression that it may be unwise for me to move to Thunderbird. I have another alternative - move the hotmail accounts to POP3 accounts at gmail. I am emotionally attached to my hotmail accounts, particularly the one I got in Oct/nov 1996 - before Unclue Bill bought it - but I really like the idea of a micro browser in my mail client - and that's never going to happen in WLM..

If anyone is having problems with T'bird and hotmail and they value their hotmail accounts more than they value Thunderbird then they should take a look at the Windows Live Mail client. It's not an outlook express clone - it fact the OE bigots complain about it being "soooo" different to their beloved OE - which is why I opted for it over T'bird, which IMO is an OE clone in its behaviour.

TIA

You are using the POP port for SMTP, you need to change the SMTP settings. Try port 25

Try increasing the connection timeout (tools -> options -> Advanced -> Disc and Network)

Looks like something has gone wrong with the database.

There's two things to try
1- Close Thunderbird, search your profile for domains.db3 and delete it. When TB is started this file will be recreated.

2- Reinstall Thunderbird.

I deleted domains.db3 but I still have the same troubles.

I have a lot of email accounts and I do not want to recreate them all if I reinstall TB so I'll copy the prefs.js

Can you please tell me what is the default webmail code in prefs.js?

These are my webmail lines in prefs.js

user_pref("hotmail.Account.xxxx@hotmail~com.iMode", 2);
user_pref("hotmail.selectedUserName", "xxxx@hotmail.com");
user_pref("hotmail.version", 1);
user_pref("webmail.logging.comms.FileLocation", "D:\\Temp\\webmail logs");
user_pref("webmail.logging.comms.UseLog", true);
user_pref("webmail.server.port.pop", 1025);
user_pref("yahoo.Account.xxxx@yahoo~com.bBeta", true);
user_pref("yahoo.Account.xxxx@yahoo~com.bClassic", false);
user_pref("yahoo.Account.xxxx@yahoo~com.bReUseSession", true);
user_pref("yahoo.Account.xxxx@yahoo~com.bUseShortID", false);
user_pref("yahoo.selectedTabIndex", 0);
user_pref("yahoo.selectedUserName", "xxxx@yahoo.com");
user_pref("yahoo.version", 1);

I use libero plugin as well but there are no libero lines in my prefs.

After 2 hours of reinstalling TB and all add-ons and all accounts I've found out that Webmail still doesn't work.

I think I'll uninstall it.
It is too long that it doesn't work and I can't find out what it is.

still same stuff
Sending of username did not succeed. Mail server localhost responded: gmail.com is a unsupported domain.

same for hotmail and libero

I was asked in the Support Thread to post here...

Recently installed TB 2.0.0.14 on WinXP machine, to replace Outlook Express Hotmail Account. Install and migration from OE went great and have been using TB for about a month with no probs. Then past couple of days suddenly cannot download emails anymore, get the following message: 'local host responded: ' negative vibes from email address..'..
No Firewall running, as far as I know no Windows Updates have been unstalled recently, extensions are all up to date, etc. Webmail.ext is 1.3.2, Hotmail.ext 1.2.18.

Your help is appreciated...

This is a answer you (comodo dragon) gave in 2005 to a user with the same kind of trouble:
http://www.mozdev.org/pipermail/webmail ... 00211.html

My guess is the Thunderbird is try to check for email before webmail's
database has loaded. I've made a few changes in the Deerpark version so
the db is loaded earlier in startup process, this may fix the problem.

-------------------
When I click on Hotmail Options --> accounts

No Hotmail Accounts Found

same yahoo - libero

Where does Webmail search for accounts?
In prefs.js?

Once in a while it detect the account.

--------------------

webmail crashes thunderbird when I click on Webmail Options --> Domains

thanks, comodo dragon, for the quick reply.
unfortunately, i tried setting the the time out from the default value of 60 seconds to 600, 6000 and 60000, none of which changed the behavior. i currently left it at 60000 seconds.

starting yesterday, i sometimes (but not every time i start tb; i'd say roughly every other time) i get very quickly an error warning which reads along the lines "the RETR-command has failed. the mail server localhost replied: negative vibes from ...my hotmail account...@hotmail.com". at the same time all my normal sized mail is downloaded and again, in accordance with before, due to the large mail with pictures attached (one is 8mb, the other 12.2mb, i know, whoever sends mails like that, but not me to do anything about it now) i get the message with no subject and a dash as sender again. the message content is a load of html code which i've pasted to the end of this post (maybe it means something to you ?). afterwards, i have to log into hotmail browser based to retrieve the large email from the trash as it has been moved there...

if you have any suggestions, i'd so greatly appreciate them,

paddie
