SM 2.49.2 - e-mail search window bug

Post by MonkeyRiver »

Hello,

if we search mails for some account (for example Local Folders) with the search window, there is a bug in the search results functionality.

After the search window the result window appears as following:

Code: Select all

Messages found:
----------------------------------------------------
Subject From Folder
----------------------------------------------------
Subj1 From1 Folder-1
Subj2 From2 Folder-1
Subj3 From3 Folder-2
Subj4 From4 Folder-2
Then it can happen the following: if we double click on the message Subj4 the message Subj1 can be shown in a separate window. If we double click on the message Subj3 the message Subj2 can be shown.

My opinion it depends of the name of Folder-2. In my case the Folder-2 has a point character in its name, like this:

xxxxx.yyyy

If we move messages to another folder with a button in search result window, the messages can be also wrong assigned what is worse as the wrong message view.

Pity!

How is the account set up in Thunderbird, as POP or IMAP?

Well, Local Folders is a pseudo-account and does not actually connect directly with the servers of your email provider, so that didn't answer my question. Stil...

First back up your Profile -- Profile Backup
Then Compact Local Folders
Try that search again.

I tried compact/rebuild/repair before creating this topic.

It does not help.

Close SeaMonkey and navigate to your Profile Folder ( http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_Folder ). Find the files with the extension msf, such as Inbox.msf. Note that there will be sets of two files with the name but only one of these will have the MSF extension. Delete the files with the MSF extension. Restart SeaMonkey, compact all folders, and see if things are back to normal. Note that the MSF files do NOT contain your messages. They are, for lack of a better term, an index file and will be recreated by Thunderbird as required.

If this procedure provides no improvement, see this link -- http://kb.mozillazine.org/Recover_messa ... upt_folder

It does not help.

I found an interesting behavior in the search result window

Code: Select all

    Messages found:
    ----------------------------------------------------
    Subject From Date Folder
    ----------------------------------------------------
    Subj1 From1 2/1/2017 Folder-1
    Subj2 From2 2/2/2017 Folder-1
    Subj3 From3 2/1/2018 Folder-2
    Subj4 From4 2/1/2018 Folder-2
For this example I added the column "Date" with relevant dates - it means the Folder-1 has older dates, the Folder-2 has newer dates exactly as in my profile.

If I sort by the column "Date" or "Folder" ascending (exactly as shown above), the messages Subj3 and Subj4 will be shown wrong.

If I sort by the column "Date" or "Folder" descending, the messages Subj3 and Subj4 will be shown correct!

So this is obviously a bug in the search result window.

New information.

If it is sorted descending the same thing happen in other direction:

Code: Select all

        Messages found:
        ----------------------------------------------------
        Subject From Date Folder
        ----------------------------------------------------
        Subj4 From4 2/1/2018 Folder-2
        Subj3 From3 2/1/2018 Folder-2
        Subj2 From2 2/2/2017 Folder-1
        Subj1 From1 2/1/2017 Folder-1
With double click on the message Subj1 or Subj2 the messages Subj3 or Subj4 will be shown.

Too bad.

Hello,

is there any chance the issue will be fixed in SM 2.49.x ?

The 2.49.x is actually the last version which can run under Windows XP (like Firefox 52), so I would stay with it for the next 10 years.

Otherwise I have to use SM 2.46 as my main browser/mailer which is good, but has memory leaks and performance problems with javascript like you wouldn't believe.
